A child prodigy, at age 14 he performed with the New Orleans Philharmonic. He attended Juilliard, afterward performing with several jazz legends, including Art Blakey, Sweets Edison, Elvin Jones, John Lewis, Dizzy Gillespie and Sarah Vaughn.
