April’s Sparklers: Those Who Choose to Shine

Every month here at Dandelion Chandelier we like to celebrate the people, groups and institutions who have spread light in the world recently, even in the midst of great darkness. Every day around the world, people choose to shine in ways large and small. These moments of grace don’t always get reported on, and unfortunately they can be quickly forgotten. To inspire us all to keep reaching out, here are some Sparklers that caught our attention in recent weeks:

Vienna on the Hudson at the Lovely Neue Galerie

The intimate, deeply civilized and charming Neue Galerie on Fifth Avenue in New York City’s Upper East Side is one of the many hidden gems of Manhattan that too many people miss in their rush toward the neighboring Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim. If you haven’t visited yet – or haven’t been there in a while – you owe it to yourself to stop in this spring. The museum is celebrating its 15th anniversary. The current exhibit is deeply moving. And the sacher tortes are as delicious as ever.

Not-to-be-Missed Modern Masterworks at the Guggenheim

The contemporary art world moves at a dizzying pace, and every now and then it’s a luxury to slow down and reflect on one of the most important collections in the world. On the occasion of its 80th anniversary, the Guggenheim Museum in New York is doing just that with “Visionaries: Creating a Modern Guggenheim,” an exhibition of 170 works from its permanent collection, many of which are rarely on view.

Do Rich Men and Women Spend Their Money the Same Way?

If you asked an elementary school-aged boy in the late 1960s or early ‘70s what he wanted to own when he grew up, if he could own anything in the world, he would very likely have had one or more of the following on his list: a rocket ship, his own car company, an airplane (or even better, an airline), maybe his local newspaper, and a sports team. Yes, these are clichés, and gross generalizations based on gender – but they’re also true.
