Luxury Insider Tips on the Best First Trip to Cape Town

Insider Itinerary is an occasional series here at Dandelion Chandelier that shines a light on the best places to see, stay, and dine in some of the hottest travel destinations worldwide. Our far-flung correspondents are sharing their inside tips about how to best experience their chosen cities, especially if you’re visiting for the first time. Consider it your local luxury GPS. You’re welcome!  First up, our Paris Bureau Chief shares the ideal itinerary for a first trip to Cape Town, South Africa. His (lightly edited) suggestions follow. The coastal city is the second-most populous urban area in South Africa after Johannesburg, and the legislative capital of the country. In 2014, Cape Town was named the best place in the world to visit by both the New York Times and the Daily Telegraph. It made several lists of the best places to go in 2017. Several of our correspondents name it as one of their favorite destinations in the world. After reading this, we’re pretty sure you’ll want to see it for yourself.

Where are the Best Luxury Pop-up Shops this Holiday?

‘Tis the season for pop-up stores. What’s on tap for holiday 2017, and which ones are worthy of a stop this year, whether you’re planning to buy, or just curious to see what’s happening offline (just to be clear, “offline” refers to a brick and mortar edifice that back in the day was called a retail store). Here’s our Dandelion Chandelier list of pop-ups that are already open or opening soon. Nearly all are in New York City, but some are also in other cities in the US and in London. Not to get you crazy, but one was so exclusive that it’s already come and gone: Chanel’s pop-up, the Coco Club, was open for just one day – on November 12 – and was dedicated to the brand’s Boyfriend watch. The pop-up was at The Wing in SoHo, with three rooms illustrating the value of time, and a numerologist on hand to give personalized readings. C’est la vie. Maybe next year.

What You Need to Know about St. Barth’s Right Now

The French-speaking island of St. Barth’s – or to be precise, Saint Barthélemy – has long been a glamorous year-end playground and the destination of choice for the owners of mega-yachts, the fashion industry elite, entertainers, athletes and their entourages. The Leeward Islands tropical paradise is the stuff of dreams. But the 2017 hurricane season was brutal, with a string of named storms wreaking havoc on many parts of the Caribbean, including this lovely island. So what will become of this year’s holiday season? Will New Year’s Eve in St. Barth’s still be the number one place in the world for a glittering celebration? We asked our far-flung correspondents to investigate, and here’s what they reported back. It’s the latest intelligence we have on what you need to know if you’ve planned (or were planning) a stop in St. Barth’s this winter. Of course it could change, but this is what we know for now.
