The weather is perfect in the tropics and the southern hemisphere. North America and Europe sport iconic winter landscapes perfect for snow sports of all kinds. This year, the upcoming Winter Olympics will pull a great deal of the world’s focus toward South Korea, so expect to see lots of commentary about travel and entertainment options in or around Pyeongchang. We’re totally in the mood for a destination spa, given the consequences of our holiday fun last month. And there’s a chic new hotel in our hometown, Detroit — hello, MLK Jr weekend. The New Year brings new restaurants and bars to explore. And for those who embrace the cold, there’s something magical for you, too. Oh, and there’s an orange-throwing carnival in Italy that you might want to check out.

In the world of speed machines, January is the start of the “big” auto show season, with Detroit the focus for introductions of new luxury models. It’s also the start of the classic car collectors’ auction season. There are boat shows in Phuket, London, Düsseldorf, Vancouver, Toronto and New York. And yacht races in New Zealand, Barbados and Antigua. It’s time to rev up for a thrill ride of a month.

Oh, and there’s a $16 million horse race in Florida. Plenty of ways to burn off those holiday pounds — but sadly, just watching from the couch doesn’t count. Game on.

Men’s Fashion Weeks are on in four different cities, and there are women’s Fashion Weeks in Spain, Copenhagen and Hong Kong. Plus a spectacular watch show in Geneva. It’s high style at the height of winter. Dress accordingly.
