November is a month of remembrance, with Armistice Day and Veteran’s Day being celebrated. It’s also a month of anticipation, as the holiday festivities begin and the holiday lights start to twinkle.  But for many of us, November is mostly about the moments spent with family and friends at Thanksgiving.

And while this year’s celebration may feature Zoom gatherings in lieu of big, boisterous ones, there is still much to be thankful for.  In addition to obvious things like family and good health, we are thankful that, despite all of the difficulties of 2020, there are still events and activities taking place throughout the world that spread joy.  And this month, thankfully, there is no shortage of them.

This November, arts and performing arts lovers can enjoy the unique gumbo of folk, blues and gospel of Martha Redbone from socially distanced circles at Lincoln Center or head to ICA Boston to explore the role of art in 2020 I’m yours: Encounters with Art in Our Times. 

Sports fans can watch the NCAA College Basketball Season tip off and another Masters Tournament grace the greens, while K-Pop and music fans can enjoy the latest album drop from BTS.  Book lovers can watch the Netflix adaptation of Hillbilly Elegy from Ron Howard or deep dive into the world of champagne with the new book Better with Bubbles in preparation for the holidays.

1. martha redbone at Lincoln Center 

Lincoln Center’s New Stages will host the multi-talented vocalist, songwriter, and composer Martha Redbone for an evening of folk, blues and gospel from the socially distanced circles of the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Lawn – Nov 5 

2. augusta masters golf 

This year’s Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Course is shaping up to look completely different.  In addition to no spectators and the elimination of the Par 3 Contest, ESPN will be hosting its popular College Game Day pregame football show from the stage. It overlooks Ike’s Pond and the ninth green of the Par 3 course – Nov 12 – 15 

3. i’m yours at the ica 

I’m yours: Encounters with Art in Our Times at the ICA Boston asks what the role of art and museums are during the past six months of protest, economic chaos and the ongoing pandemic – Nov 18 – May 23

4. taking space at pafa

The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts will host Taking Space: Contemporary Women Artists and the Politics of Scale.  The show takes into consideration the way in which female artists take up space, whether that be the physical presence of their bodies, space within a gallery, or simply as a woman moving throughout the world – Nov 19 – Apr 11

Netflix’s visually stunning new series The Liberator is a “Band of Brothers”-like World War II drama that uses a new animation technique that blends CGI and live action – Nov 11 

11. the crown

Season 4 of The Crown on Netflix will introduce Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher, and Josh O’Connor and Emma Corrin as Charles and Diana.  Olivia Colman stars again as Queen Elizabeth – Nov 15 

12. hillbilly elegy

Based on the bestselling memoir of the same name by J.D. Vance, Hillbilly Elegy follows a Yale Law School graduate as he returns to his poor Midwest hometown to reflect on his Appalachian upbringing, the opioid crisis, the white working class and how he managed to escape from it all – Nov 24

Set in 1973, Uncle Frank on Amazon Prime stars Paul Bettany as Frank Bedsloe, whose road trip from Manhattan to South Carolina with his niece to attend a family funeral becomes complicated when Frank’s lover unexpectedly comes along for the ride – Nov 25

14. the kanneh-mason’s carnival

Royal wedding cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason is just one member of an insanely talented family.  In the new album Carnival, he collaborates with his six siblings for their first album all together, with some famous contributors: Michael Morpurgo will read poetry, joined by Olivia Colman – Nov 6

The pandemic might have gotten in the way of BTS’s plans for a world tour, but 2020 has still been a prolific year for the K-Pop titans.  Chief amongst their accomplishments?  Topping charts around the world with Map of the Soul: 7 in February. Now, the biggest group in pop music is back with BE, their ninth full-length album – Nov 20

16. miley cyrus plastic hearts

The California wildfires of 2018 reduced Miley Cyrus’s home to ashes and, in the process, destroyed much of the new music she had been working on. She started again, though, and is now releasing Plastic Hearts, which in addition to featuring all new tines, will include a full-throttle live cover of Blondie’s Heart of Glass on there, as well as a take on Zombie by The Cranberries – Nov 27

The new White Elephant Palm Beach, sister property to the White Elephant Resort in Nantucket is opening in Florida. The 32-room hotel was built to feel like a private residence. 24. festival of wood & barrel-aged beers

the world’s largest and most prestigious barrel-aged beer festival and competition, the Festival of Wood & Barrel-Aged Beers, is going digital.  In addition to streaming the awards ceremony live, participants can enjoy assorted six-packs of FoBAB beer entries, which span all 12 style categories – Nov 14 

25. beaujolais nouveau day

Beaujolais Nouveau Day is traditionally marked in France with fireworks, music and festivals.  This year, however, the Beaujolais Nouveau wines have already been shipped. Now the consumers may enjoy them from the safety of their homes on the third Thursday of November – Nov 19

Hairy dudes

This month starts out with All Saint’s Day on the 1st, which honors all the saints, known and unknown.  November is also Men’s Health Awareness Month, so expect to see typically cleanshaven men on Zoom calls, on the fields or on the greens sporting mustaches in support of Movember. 

civic duties

Election Day in the US is on the 3rd, so don’t forget to lace up your favorite sneakers and exercise your civic duty and vote.  The 11th is Veteran’s Day in the US as well as Armistice Day commemorating the end of WWI.  We are grateful for the service of all veterans and those currently serving. 

wonderful holiday #1: diwali

Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, begins on November 14. Spiritually signifying the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair. The celebration includes millions of lights shining on housetops and around temples and other buildings; the main festival night coincides with the darkest, new moon night of the Hindu calendar.

wonderful holiday #2: thanksgiving

Whether you plan to spend the day with your quarantine pod or with extended family via video call, Thanksgiving is celebrated in America on the 26th, along with many beloved traditions, including the 94th year, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City (which will be largely virtual this year due to COVID-19).   

Thanksgiving weekend will also see lots of football, including a Detroit Lions game in the NFL on the 26th. There will be lots of food and drink, chief among them: pie, as well as expressions of gratitude.  And there’s also Black Friday on the 27th. 

By the close of the month, the holiday season will have officially begun. Of course, no one will wait until then to start decking the halls: all month long, holiday lights and decorations will be installed in the glittering cities and charming villages of the world

Wherever November takes you, we hope it leaves you feeling thankful.
