The typical fall fashion shopping narrative generally has one or more of the following elements: sweaters, leather jackets, boots, jeans, a trench coat and a wool skirt. This year, though, the essential fall fashion element is a face mask. As jarring as it may be, we say don’t let a face mask get in the way of a good time! We’re embracing these necessary new accessories, and coordinating our outfits so that they’re just another element of our overall look. Our in-house stylist Julie Chang Murphy has five key fall trends, shown in multiple ways, with masks to match. Yep, these are the best chic luxury face masks to buy for fall.
now trending: the fashionable face mask for fall 2020
No matter what stage of the pandemic you’re in, it’s important to know that we have all been cycling through the emotions. We’ve had all the feels.
Some days we are thankful for this extra closeness with our immediate family. Other days we are in a state of mourning over missed friendships or favorite community spots that have shuttered their doors. Honestly, we haven’t been this mercurial since our teens.

While some of us have relished living in our loungewear (and still do), others quickly realized that getting properly dressed in the morning- at least from the waist up, has done wonders for our mood.
We’ve read all the possible scenarios about coronavirus in the fall (yikes!). But one thing we can control, besides wearing a mask, is our own attitudes.
And if coordinating our masks to our tops and framing our covered faces with some statement earrings or necklaces makes us feel better? So be it. We’ll take what we can get these days.
the best chic luxury fall face masks to buy right now
Looking ahead at the fall trends, we have created a few ensembles that make wearing a mask look chic and less apocalyptic. Let’s get to it!
1. Charming Cardigans
The cardigan is making a comeback this fall thanks in part to ’80’s prep nostalgia as seen in Alberta Ferretti’s, Dior’s, and Chanel’s fall winter 2020 collections. And for those Zoom work calls, they look put together, but less stuffy than wearing a blazer in your own home.
From left to right:
Miu Miu’s grandpa-inspired cardigan ($2,940) is embellished with leather shoulder patches and and an array of crystals and sequins. Coordinate with a gray and white abstract gardenia print face mask ($38) and diamond bezel studs ($295) from Mateo (one of our favorite black jewelry designers).
JoosTricot’s vintage-inspired, cable-knit red cardigan ($498) dotted with white beads is so charming and whimsical. You could pair with pearl earrings, of course, but we’re partial to Rachel Comey’s colorful acrylic drop earrings ($125) to keep things a little more quirky. And with Lover + Friends silk floral face mask ($21), you’re good to go.
Brock Collection’s wool and cashmere cardigan ($1,159) with embroidered cascading flowers is librarian chic at its best. Keep it monochrome with sustainable LA based label Graf Lantz’s organic cotton face mask ($22) in olive green. For earrings, it’s Mateo for the win again. These 14K Gold Half Moon Floating Pearl Hoops ($2,175) draw inspiration from Kandinsky’s painting entitled, Floating.
2. Aristocratic Ruffles
Ruffles can get a bad rap for being too frilly and fussy. But as Chanel, Prada and Celine showed us this season, done properly they can look elevated – with a cool, aristocratic air.
From left to right:
Channel your favorite romantic poet with Self-Portrait’s ruffled yoke cotton blouse ($300). Chiara Boni La Petite Robe’s Prince of Wales check face mask ($59) is the perfect complement to this top while Alison Lou’s enamel and 14kt gold star hoops ($2,312) up the fun factor.
If you prefer your ruffles flouncy and light, check out Rhode’s khaki green, cotton voile blouse ($297) for an effortless and feminine mood. Diabloli Kill’s black onyx and white agate horn earrings ($750) add some edge; they are modeled after amulets worn by ancient Egyptians. The lush floral face mask comes in a set of 5 ($40) from boho brand, Johnny Was.
Isabel Marant’s ruffle trim top ($370) is a fresh take on the closet staple denim shirt. With Indah’s zebra graphic print face mask ($13) and Rachel Comey’s striped bone motif earrings ($125), you’ll look safari-chic out there in the wild.
3. Folk Art
From patchwork patterns at Alexander McQueen and Marni to tapestry-inspired looks at Paco Rabanne and Gabriela Hearst, it’s clear we just want to wrap ourselves in something warm and cozy.
From left to right:
Etro’s multicolored patchwork print top ($356) is one of those tops that makes you feel instantly ready and put-together. Lean into the boho vibes with a matching pink tie dye face mask. And the fall always means a return to luxurious jewel tones; Alison Lou’s emerald drops ($1,790) are just right.
We already loved Sea’s versatile hand-quilted jacket ($445), which can be worn as a top or as outerwear in the beginning days of fall. But when we found out that it is made by a women’s collective in India, and we were all in. Marta Larsson’s quartz collar necklace ($493) adds a little shimmer. Joah Love makes some of our favorite face masks yet. This seersucker version ($20) would coordinate perfectly.
We’ve been following Fe Noel ever since featuring her bio in a piece about black fashion designers last year. This sophisticated and elegant blouse ($398) is hand-printed in her New York studio. Wear with Khiry’s gold and tiger eye stone hoops ($465) and Graf Lantz’s organic cotton mask in Plum ($22) for a striking look any day of the week.
4. Mad for Plaid
Is it just us or does every fall spell a return to plaid? It makes sense. ’Tis the season of back-to-school uniforms and warm wool blankets. This season, it seems like every designer was doubling down on plaid: Versace, Miu Miu, Saint Laurent, Celine. And of course, Burberry and Alexander McQueen. We’re not complaining!
From left to right:
Menswear shirting and feminine polish unite in Victoria Beckham’s plaid cotton button down ($850). We love Pomellato’s moody, smoky quartz earrings ($4,650) and a denim face mask ($24) to match.
For a more rugged look, consider BB Dakota’s buffalo check shirt ($148) in an appealing olive and black colorway. Rachel Comey’s chunky choker ($195) makes it clear that you’re a fashionable lumberjack. While Cosabella’s black lace face mask ($18) shows your softer side.
Isabel Marant’s plaid shirt ($415) embodies a hint of vintage femininity with its puffed sleeve. We’d add a touch of whimsy by pattern mixing with Lizzie Fortunato’s gold-plated hoops ($95) which come with interchangeable charms – we’re always a fan of leopard print ($35). This Lele Sadoughi black chambray face mask ($40) with tiny star studs comes in a pack with three other subtly-embellished masks.
Naked Neutrals
Spring’s hottest color is still going strong in the fall. Call it mocha, caramel, or camel, Stella McCartney, Hermes and Loewe all sent models down the runway in these warm, cozy hues.
From left to right:
Alice and Olivia’s short puff sleeve and pointelle knit sweater ($295) is the perfect transitional piece to add to your wardrobe. Coordinate with Lizzie Forrtunato’s statement earrings ($110) of gold-plated brass, black agate, tortoise-colored acrylic rings, and hanging rose quartz. We love Echo’s prints and were delighted to find that they are now making masks. This abstract leopard print ($12) one has a 98% score on the Bacterial Filtration Efficiency (BFE) test (the FDA recommends 95% or higher for non-medical masks).
Fe Noel’s beautifully draped linen wrap top ($228) looks casually elegant for whatever the day has in store. Octave Jewelry’s earrings ($445) featuring lavender jadeite, Willow Creek jasper and purple jade add sophistication with their graphic forms inspired by mid-century sculpture. And we love how this black face mask ($20) from Joah Love has mauve tie-dye trim that plays wonderfully off the lavender hue of the earrings.
This beige sweater ($994) from Bottega Veneta is anything but boring with its revealing cut-outs at the back and side seams, slightly over-sized fit and asymmetrical hem. An onyx, Blacklip shell and mother-of-pearl charm necklace ($258) and a charcoal and gauze stripe face mask ($20) complete the waist-up ensemble.
