is maintaining social distance wrecking your skin?
There’s been a meme circulating around recently: a photo of an old woman in her 80’s, smiling pleasantly at the camera. The caption reads: “Here’s Sue. 31 years old, homeschooling her kids for the past 5 days. Great job Sue. Keep it up.”
Of all the jokes coming out during this coronavirus era, this one is one of our favorites. It’s totally on-point with how many of us are feeling these days.
From homeschooling to working from home surrounded by the entire family to just coping with day to day life in a pandemic, we are seeing the effects of all that stress on our bodies – particularly on our skin.

the Best Luxury Skincare Tools for an at-home DIY facial
1. cleansing
Take your face wash to another level with Clarisonic’s Mia Prima ($99). This sonic cleaner helps to remove blackheads and long-wear makeup. It moves back and forth over the skin up to 300 times a second. Upgrade your cleansing routine with Swedish design with sonic cleansing technology. Foreo’s Luna 3 ($199) features bacteria-repelling silicone nubs that help lift impurities from pores without aggressive scrubbing. Finally, ReFa, the Japanese brand beloved for its skin-cooling S Carat roller, just dropped the world’s first handmade Kumanofude cleansing brush with 3D Sonic Ion technology called Clear ($300). The innovation allows the device to extract hard-to-reach impurities (we’re talking deep in the pores) that weren’t accessible until now.
2. steaming
A good steam is an essential part of any facial. Not only does it feel great, but the blast of warm, moist air works wonders when it comes to helping clean out and clear out your complexion. The Dr. Dennis Gross Pro Facial Steamer ($149) is a must have for home facials. Not only does it work fast (a full cycle takes only 9 minutes), but it has a wide nozzle for complete and even steam coverage. Other nice features? An automatic shut-off function (safety first) and a carrying handle for easy portability. For more affordable picks there is the Okachi Gliya Facial Steamer ($70) and the Pure Code Nano-Ionic Facial Steamer ($69) which both feature nano ionic steam for deep penetration and hydration.
3. sculpting and lifting
Sculpting tools can help to contour cheekbones, lift jawlines and massage heavy eyebrows. Nurse Jamie’s Uplift Massaging Beauty Roller ($69) works to promote lymphatic drainage and reduce bloat in your face, which creates a more sculpted look. Jillian Dempsey’s vibrating 24 karat Gold Sculpting Bar ($195) lifts and sculpts the skin with a series of vibrations that mimic a professional massage. For the ultimate lift there is NuFace’s Trinity Facial Toning Device ($325) which stimulates facial muscles in 5-to-20 minute sessions, leaving your complexion firmer and more toned.
4. anti-aging and brightening
Long hailed for their powerful results, LED lights treat a range of skincare issues in 10 minutes or less a day. Dr. Dennis Gross created the DRx SpectraLite FaceWare Pro ($435) with an impressive 162 LED lights (both red and blue) to destroy acne-causing bacteria and boost collagen production. LightStim for Wrinkles ($249) is a handheld, completely portable device that uses skin-rejuvenating wavelengths of red-light energy to stimulate collagen and subsequently fade fine lines and wrinkles over time. Another good alternative is the Optimizer Voyage Tri-Light++ ($295) by Skin Inc Supplement Bar which promises to help with nearly any skin-related issue you might want to address, whether it be fine lines, acne or hyperpigmentation.
5. re-texturizing
If you’re one to pore over your face consider the Dermaflash Dermapore Ultrasonic Pore Extractor & Serum Infuser ($100), a two-in-one sonic extractor that first gently pulls out pesky blackheads, then helps push serum into the skin. BeautyBio’s GloPRO Microneedling Facial Regeneration Tool ($199) is a cultish microneedling tool that stimulates cellular turnover. It even features a red LED light to further stimulate collagen production. Alternatively you can opt for PMD’s Personal Microderm Pro ($199) which offers the benefits of microdermabrasion from the comfort of the couch. We’re talking things like the reduced appearance of dark spots, wrinkles, blemishes and enlarged pores, plus a brighter skin tone and more refined texture over time.
6. reducing puffiness and inflammation
Reduce inflammation and take down puffiness with Herbivore’s extremely relaxing Jade Roller ($30). Depuff and chill out with Stacked Skincare’s stainless steel Ice Roller ($24). Designed to be kept in the freezer, this roller will give your skim the ultimate jolt of blood circulating-cold for a calmer complexion. Georgia Louise’s Lift + Sculpt Butterfly Stone ($75) is hands down the prettiest tool on our list. This traditional Chinese tool increases blood flow and drains the lymphatic system. It tones complexions when moved over the skin in quick motions.
