There are debuts aplenty, including the world premiere of Of Love and Rage from the ABT and a brand new production of Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer at the MET. Also at the MET is the annual National Council Auditions Grand Finals Concert, where new singers have the opportunity to make their mark.

In visual arts, the brand new X Museum opens in Beijing. And Gerhard Richter: Painting After All at the Met Breuer will feature works never shown before in the US.

We don’t know about you, but this is making us keen to embrace the season and start anew.

One of Europe’s top ballet companies, Ballet Vlaanderen (known locally as Royal Ballet of Flanders), celebrates its 50th anniversary with a Joyce debut – Mar 3 – 7

In celebration of the centennial of the 19th amendment in 2020, which gave women the right to vote, the Martha Graham Company will perform The EVE Project. It’s a collection of new commissions and signature Graham classics that each make bold statements about female power at The Kennedy Center – Mar 5 – 7

The American Ballet Theatre will present the world premier Of Love and Rage, based on the novel Callirhoe by Chariton. The Greek tale of star-crossed lovers will be performed at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts Costa Mesa, California. This is choreographer Alexei Ratmansky’s seventeenth work for the ABT – Mar 5 – 8

The Royal Ballet revives for the first time a new production of Tchaikovsky’s magnificent classical ballet, Swan Lake – Mar 5 – 16

The Richard Alston Dance Company will present its final performances after 25 years in operation. Final Edition is at London’s Sadler’s Wells Theater – Mar 7 – 8

2. best classical music concerts in march 2020

To mark the centenary of legendary violinist Isaac Stern’s birth, Emanuel Ax, Leonidas Kavakos and Yo-Yo Ma will perform together at Carnegie Hall. The three form an intense trio, as each helped redefine contemporary notions of chamber music. This all-Beethoven program features a cello sonata from the composer’s late period dedicated to his patron Archduke Rudolf.  – Mar 4 – 8

The Orchestre de Paris will hold its first event of the season with Finnish conductorJukka-Pekka Saraste. The program includes a performance of Mahler’s powerful Sixth Symphony – Mar 4 – 5

Barcelona Obertura Spring Festival will spread classical music across Barcelona for two weeks – Mar 11 – 30

Voices of Hope: Artists in Times of Oppression at Carnegie Hall will examine the role of artists during times of injustice through a series of 16 concerts – Mar 12 – May 22

François-Xavier Roth conducts the London Symphony Orchestra in an evening of Dukas including his best known work The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and lesser known works such as Symphony in C – Mar 22

Félix Fénéon is the subject of a new exhibition at the MoMA. Fénéon had a wide-ranging influence on the development of modernism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
