You know the old saying: “You can never have too many shoes.” Yes, we know that you can also never have too many friends or books. But sometimes, it’s OK to submit yourself to the simple pleasure of this game-changing accessory. No courtship required. No forcing yourself to get past the boring parts. Just a reliable confidence booster right out of the box.
This spring’s footwear trends are some of the most compelling we’ve seen. For the first time in a while, we want one from each category. Some, like the summer boot and the menswear-inspired loafer, make us re-think and re-imagine our entire wardrobes. Suddenly, slinky summer dresses can be presented with more edginess and sass. Alternatively, the shoe jewelry trend dresses up our basic summer go-to’s of t-shirts and cut-offs, so we don’t have to try that hard to be just a little bit fancy.

The top Trends to Know in Spring 2020 Shoes
1. Shoe Jewelry
Why limit jewelry to just the face and hands? One of the prettiest trends of the season is footwear with anklet embellishments. Maximalists will love Givenchy’s heavy chain embellished sandals ($850) or Bottega Veneta’s mesh heels ($1,180) with a chunky chain ankle strap.
For a more sweet and playful look, check outMarc Jacobs’ charm bracelet sandal ($650) and Staud’s colorful beaded suede pumps ($350), which perfectly capture the essence of summer fun.
Have a fling with bling and channel your inner princess with Miu Miu’s crystal embellished flats ($559). And these Wandler crystal fringe mules ($600) are perfect for the summer wedding dance floor.
2. Loafers
This preppy staple gets a stylish upgrade with block heels, new textures, and color. They’re a natural shoe-in for all the tailored looks this season. But we also love them 90’s style, with a short denim skirt or long floral dress.
Gabriela Hearst’s platform loafers ($1,190) are understated luxury at its finest. And who doesn’t want to be taller without a stiletto heel? Prada’s block heel loafer ($1,100) ups the luxury quotient by adding woven leather detailing and finishing with a shiny gold chain embellishment.
Flat loafers get a boost with pops of color and fashion-forward design. We love Ganni’s sky blue snake embossed version ($345), which would look sharp with cropped capri pants. Think loafers can’t be avant garde? Think again. Leave it to Maison Margiela ($950) to create a cutting edge loafer with a split toe and a color blocked heel that also folds down.
Or go all out with Marc Jacob’s patent leather tangerine Papillon loafer ($495), which packs a punch and checks multiple style boxes with its on-trend color.

3. Summer Boot
Tall boots in the summer? Really? Angle boots, sure, but over the knee? We were a bit skeptical, too, but these boots are fabricated in more lightweight leathers and materials. And they look super chic. It’s official: over-the-knee boots are four-season investments. Maybe it’s time for a new pair?
We are in love withThe Row’s slouchy white leather ($2,190) and Tory Burch’s floral embroidered ($750) versions.
Pastel colors instantly make a boot more wearable in the spring and summer months. Paris Texas’ light blue boot ($620) is made from denim. Think pink with Jimmy Choo’s croc effect leather knee highs ($1,495), which would pair beautifully with a graceful midi-skirt.
Timeless earth tones get an update with Wandler’s modern, two-tone design ($780). Isabel Marant’s suede style ($655) seems custom-made for modern day muses on the musical festival circuit.
4. Square Toes
There’s a new shape in town that’s making it hip to be square. The blunt line instantly gives a shoe a clean, graphic and modern look. High fashion designers like Bottega Veneta ($1,270) and Balenciaga ($1,450) initiated this trend. Now everyone is in on it.
Wandler’s python print mule ($470) in blush or the Isa color blocked beige and candy pink mule ($411) are both distinctive yet wearable.
And it’s time to replace those old flip-flops with these easy square toe slides from Carlotha Ray ($115), which also happen to be rose scented! And we couldn’t resist the cute, retro styling of Yuul Yie’s waffle sandals ($380), which embody the essence of summer.

5. Chunky Platforms
What’s not to love about this leg-lengthening and emboldening silhouette? Not only are they 70’s chic – they’re also comfortable and supportive to wear.
Rochas’s daisy jacquard platforms ($975) are all you need to elevate that white tee and jeans combo. Nothing says summer like espadrilles, and this version from See by Chloe ($215) is finished with a rubber sole to help you chase down the ice cream truck. Or check out Stella McCartney’s oxfords ($835), which get a significant boost via a wooden platform and chunky rubber sole.
We love the clean lines of Marni’s pink wedge ($890), but we’re also into the rather lumpy and bumpy lines of See by Chloe’s suede trimmed clogs ($375). What can we say? We’re very open-minded, especially when it comes to shoes.
6. Thong Sandals
Love them or hate them, get ready to have another excuse to pamper your toes with pedicures this summer. The thong sandal is everywhere, and we think they’ve gotten a serious style upgrade that might even make the haters reconsider.
Valentino studs ($425) are always a yes, especially in this lovely shade of blue. Other embellishments like a gorgeous green silk cording and crystal centerpiece ($750), tortoise shell rings ($398) and playful round beads ($515) are a far cry from the plastic beach flip-flop. We’d be proud to wear them on the city streets with our favorite summer dresses.
For a bit more foot coverage, check out A.W.A.K.E’s fire engine red mules ($655) and Tory Burch’s leather and gold disc sandal ($278).
