New season, new accessories! Our correspondent Julie Chang Murphy is on the case with a curated list of stunning new collections and how to wear them. Here’s her list of the top trends you need to know in jewelry, hair accessories, hats, sunglasses and scarves for Spring Summer 2020.
the top trends in accessories for spring summer 2020
One of the easiest way to refresh a wardrobe for a new season without buying into all of the new extremely forward fashion trends is through a few new key accessory purchases. Not sure about wearing head-to-toe neon, as was shown on the runways of Tom Ford, Balenciaga and Courreges? Yeah, me neither. But an effervescent fluorescent yellow belt to add some edge to a summer white dress? Sure! Why not?
The fun of crazy accessories is a lot about the risk-reward profile. If you nail it, you look totally cutting-edge and savvy. And if you swing and miss, all you have to do is take off the offending hat, scarf or belt, or put the handbag or shoes up for resale. No real harm done. So let’s play!

Spring Summer 2020 accessory trends to know
1. Crazy for Color
The spring summer season always sees a revival of colors, and this one is no different. Except these are not your usual Easter egg pastels. Colors are rich and saturated with sunset hues: pink, scarlet, tangerine and saffron are dominating the scene.
For example, we love Eugenia Kim’s Mirabel Sun Hat ($495) in a bold marigold with a crisp blush bow. And her lilac and orange silky hair tie ($75). Or consider Spanish designer Adriana Iglesias’ hoop silk belt ($225) in a sexy fuchsia.
Pantone’s Color of the Year, Classic Blue, is also hugely popular this season. The shade is timeless and anything but boring in Fendi’s ocean-inspired oversized sunglasses ($365). And this gorgeous color-blocked knotted headband ($135).
But if you can’t decide on a favorite color, don’t be afraid to taste the rainbow. Colorful jewelry all along the rainbow spectrum exudes a playfulness sure to complete any spring look. Check out Roxanne Assouline’s stack of enamel bracelets ($281). Or for some bling, Anzie’s geometric 14k gold hoop earrings are set with rainbow-hued sapphire pavé ($2,650). Chain links are big this season, and we love this lemon quartz and tanzanite ring ($620) for a subtle, but no less stunning, take on the trend.
2. Big, Bold and Beautiful
The easiest formula to keep in mind this season is to supersize it all. One of the “it” bags of the moment is the enormous shoulder bag, like this one from Loewe. All of the other accessory categories are following suit.
For example, need a summer straw hat? Get the biggest one out there, like this Eliurpi Campana hat ($475). Headbands have been a thing for a few seasons now, so you’ll need something chunkier and dramatic to stand out. We love Marta Ferri’s ($345) beautiful and regal braided olive silk version. These oversized Karen Walker sunglasses ($155) and extra-wide belt from Zimmerman ($330) flatter the face and the figure.
On the jewelry front, forget dainty and delicate charms and microscopic gems. Chunky chains ($425), wide cuff bracelets ($415) andgiant hoops($145) are all you need to look confident and sexy.
3. Neo Neon
Neon will always be associated with youth culture and artificiality. But that doesn’t mean it can’t also look elevated. Exhibit A- add some gold and diamonds. New jewelry brands to know include Eera’s single drop earring ($1,924) and Melissa Kaye’s pendant necklace ($4,100) and neon yellow tip ring ($2,850). They’re both original and luxurious.
And let’s be honest, an Italian logo instantly adds some cache, too. Fendi’s monogram sunglasses ($315) with a subtle neon green rim add just the right touch of whimsy. Bucket hats were seen all over the Spring Summer 2020 runways. This Prada hat ($380) proves brighter is better.
Or just embrace the 80’s nostalgia and electrify any outfit with pieces like Isabel Marant’s cashmere and wool tassel scarf ($545). For a pop of color, try Saint Laurent’s leather belt ($425) in neon yellow. Or Acne’s lanyard ($260). And the ultimate 80’s throwback? A woven bracelet, this one courtesy of Dannijo ($250), iced with pink rhinestones.
4. Funky Fresh Pearls
These are not your grandmother’s pearls. Designers are styling these jewels in fresh new ways and using them in other accessories categories besides jewelry.
The 90’s bucket hat is given the luxe treatment and embellished with Swarovski pearls by Jennifer Behr ($265). Not enough opulence? Try Gucci’s pearl encrusted sunglasses in one of the hottest shapes this season- the cat-eye ($1,230). Or a slim belt with pearl studs and grommets ($37.99)
Pearl jewelry gets a fashion-forward update like in this gothic inspired Lanvin piece ($1,221). We also adore this colorful beaded and casual style ($195) for the everyday. Can pearl earrings look modern? Sure- check out Cult Gaia’s simple and linear pearl drops ($140).
But if you’re a traditionalist, we didn’t forget you. Simone Rocha’s pearl flower hair clip ($115) has oodles of ladylike charm and just might make growing out those bangs a little easier.
5. Mother Nature
Sustainability is on everyone’s minds and the beauty of nature is a visual reminder of why it’s so important. Tropical florals, natural materials and other earthly gems inspired a host of accessories in this assortment.
A key material this Spring is raffia. This Maison Michel Ursula wide brim hat ($920) has frayed edges for a stylish organic vibe. And this Linea Pelle woven graphic raffia belt ($58) has a wood buckle for a boho flair.
Who can forget J.Lo rocking that infamous Versace dress down the runway? Now we can all channel our inner J.Lo with Versace’s tropical foliage scarf ($320) from the same collection. Equally lush are these green stone earrings from Peracas ($645).
Earth-toned accessories will pair well with all the white and neutral apparel out this spring. We love Chan Luu’s crystal necklace ($195) featuring citrine, turquoise, abalone, pyrite, rutilated quartz, and labradorite beads on an 18k gold plated sterling silver chain. For hair, we love these sea shell inspired marbled clips ($63).
But the crowning glory has to be this silk flower and crystal embellished headband ($2,095). Perhaps as an alternative to a bridal veil or tiara? Or just because you’re that extra.
