On the other hand, if it’s solitude you seek, perhaps a quiet retreat in the Maldives will suit.
Spring is just around the corner, so personally, we’d up for a visit to one of the world’s loveliest gardens in the Americas, Asia or Europe – or at least to an indoor orchid show.
And Easter celebrations will start toward the end of the month – so you might want to hop to it.
Our picks for the top travel spots in March 2020
Here are our top picks of luxury travel destinations in March:
1. Spain.
Classical music will spread across Barcelona for over two weeks in March. The second-annual Barcelona Obertura Spring Festival runs from March 11 – 30, 2020.
You could start your March adventure in Barcelona, then take a road trip across the peninsula, exploring the charming small towns along the way. For example, Benasque is surrounded by the tallest peaks in the Pyrenees, making it ideal for outdoor activities. Explore hiking trails, waterfalls, and do some fly fishing.
The week-long Las Fallas festival in Valencia from March 15-19, 2020 welcomes spring with a display of giant, satirical papier-mâché sculptures. They’re paraded around town and set ablaze on the final night. What better way than that to banish the winter?
2. The Emilia Romagna region in Italy
This region of Italy is famous for its food and its fast cars. Emilia Romagna provides culinary delights such as balsamic vinegar, Parma ham and Parmigiano. It’s also the birthplace of luxury automobiles, including Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati. Visit markets and take an afternoon cooking class in Parma, then visit the Ferrari Museum in Maranello.
3. Mexico.
March is prime time for whale-watching in Baja, so why not head to the west coast of Mexico? By the way, it’s also prime time for celebrity-watching in Cabo San Lucas.
4. Vietnam
March is the driest month of the year in Vietnam. Perfect for exploring the northern mountains, navigating the waters of Halong Bay in a private junk and visiting the Khoai Chau district. There, you’ll find human chess-playing and dragon dancing at the Chu Dong Tu festival.
5. The Maldives
There’s probably no bad time to head to the Maldives. But March is certainly a really good time to do so. Especially since the Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi is now open. Spanning three islands in the South Male Atoll, the resort has 138 beachfront and over-water villas, each equipped with a private pool, hot tub and lounge deck area.
6. The Pacific Coast Highway
Start in Los Angles and head toward Malibu. Stay the night in San Luis Obispo. If you time it right, you can enjoy the annual San Luis Obispo International Film Festival, which will be held this year from March 12-17, 2019. The next day, visit Hearst Castle, then stay overnight in Carmel-by-the-Sea, Monterrey, or the Inn at Spanish Bay. Don’t miss the sensational aquarium on Cannery Row in Monterrey. The next day, you’ll be in San Francisco in no time.
7. Phoenix, Arizona
Springtime in the desert is beautiful – and a lot more comfortable than what you’ll find later in the year. In addition, in March, The Cactus League for Major League Baseball’s spring training is in full force. There are several stadiums nearby, including Salt River Fields at Talking Stick for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Just outside Phoenix in Tempe, you’ll find Tempe Diablo Stadium, where you can cheer on the Los Angeles Angels. With any luck, you’ll be able to catch phenom Shohei “Baby Ruth” Ohtani!
8. The Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee
We used to drive through the Great Smoky Mountains as kids on our way to visit our grandparents. We still have precious memories of their misty greenness. And this might be an ideal time to pay another visit so we can check out the new Blackberry Mountain, sister resort to the beloved Blackberry Farm. The new wellness resort opened last month and the early reviews are raves.
9. Qatar
The long awaited National Museum of Qatar officially opens in full this month. Housed in a dramatic building designed by French architect Jean Nouvel, the collection harkens back to Qatar’s heritage while also celebrating its future.
But that’s not all. The Qatar International Food Festival, which takes place from March 15-25, 2019, is great fun. Afterward, you can hang out at The Pearl-Qatar, a man-made island located off the West Bay coast that’s often referred to as the Arabian Riviera. If you have time, you can venture outside the city to go sand-boarding, take a camel ride, and explore the stunning Ras Abrouq Rock Formations.
10. Rwanda
This month sees the opening of a new luxury lodge in Rwanda’s Akagera National Park called Magashi Camp. The six-tent camp features a luxurious lounge, dining and bar area, wine cellar and pool. If you want to experience “glamping,” this one’s for you. The lodge is situated in the northeastern part of Akagera, overlooking Lake Rwanyakazinga. The location is home to one of Africa’s highest hippo densities. And some very large crocodiles. You’ve been warned, dear reader.
