Super Bowl Sunday is fast approaching. The Kansas City Chiefs will face the San Francisco 49’ers in the annual match-up of the two best teams in the NFL. According to our friends at Statista, about 50% of Americans will either be hosting or attending a Super Bowl party on Sunday, February 2, 2020. If you’re among them, and you also happen to love fashion, here are some ideas and inspiration on what to wear to the Super Bowl LIV party this year.
The Super Bowl is one of the biggest annual events on the professional sports calendar. And it’s also a cultural event – the halftime show and the television ads are frequently talked about more than who actually won the game. Lots of people who have no interest in sports still like to join in the fun on the big day. And why not? In the middle of the winter, any excuse to have some fun is always welcome.

Super Bowl LIV kicks off in Miami on Sunday February 3, 2020. So it’s time to figure out what you’re gonna wear to the party. Super-fans will undoubtedly wear their team’s jersey and a pair of jeans and call it a day. But what about the occasional or non-fan? That’s where we come in.
In our experience, the best way to dress for a Super Bowl party is to pick a team, and then put together a cute outfit based on the official team colors. Easy, no?
Actually, sometimes this can be difficult. Like if the Cleveland Browns were in the Super Bowl, and we had to rock orange and brown. Or the Miami Dolphins, which would require wearing aqua, orange, blue and white.
Even when our team, the New England Patriots, are playing we sometimes find it tough to hit the right note. You try wearing red, white and blue without looking lame.
Happily, the teams this year have made our task extremely easy. The official San Francisco 49’ers team colors are “scarlet red and metallic gold.” And guess what the Kansas City Chiefs colors are? Also red and gold.
Is this not the easiest possible scenario? Those are party colors! And everyone looks good in them. No one will know which team you’re supporting, meaning that you need to know even less about the game than you normally would. So let’s have some fun!
Here are 5 different ways to style yourself for the big game this year.
1. What to wear to the Super Bowl party: Monochrome red
Head-to-toe red was actually a key trend in the fall-winter 2019-20 designer collections. So you surely already have something in your closet to get you started. But if you’re in the mood to shop, here are some pieces you might love.
Valentino is the master of the color red, so you can’t go wrong with this wool and cashmere sweater in rich crimson ($1,490). Or this cool-girl ribbed cashmere sweater from Khaite ($1,580). Pair these tonal sweaters with slightly darker-red pants. Like Dorothee Schumacher’s dark red skinny faux-leather pants ($281) or Nili Lotan’s burgundy East Hampton leather trousers ($1,372).
A dress or a jumpsuit would be an easy way to be one-and-done with your party prep. Depending on where you’re going, we love this elegant Sies Marjan Bea tie-neck silk crepe dress ($1,366). Perfect if you’ll be in the owner’s box. If you’re looking for something sportier, this A.P.C. Vivianne drawstring-waist wool dress ($274) is perfect with sneakers. Or go with a jumpsuit from from Rhode ($395).
You could rock Prada’s shiny red patent leather ankle boots ($950) or Gabriela Hearst’s Rocia leather ankle boots ($445). Personally, we love these Christian Louboutin Spike Sock low-top trainers ($2,995).
A pair of red Prada sunglasses($259), minimalist red earrings from Rebecca de Ravenel ($231), a Mansur Gavriel bucket bag ($475) or a statement clutch from Olympia Le-Tan ($1,092) would complete the monochromatic look. The clutch is an homage to the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat – his Pez Dispenser is an image of a dinosaur wearing a crown. What does this have to do with football? Absolutely nothing.
2. What to wear to the Super Bowl party: Monochrome gold
Before you freak out, stay with us. You don’t have to look like an Oscar statuette to pull off the idea of tone-on-tone gold. Here are some ways to put top-to-toe gold together in a chic and fresh way. And if you need to cheat it, just layer in white or khaki to calm it all down.
Balenciaga’s wool-blend tweed skirt ($925) shot through with glittering gold lamé accents would look great with a slouchy relaxed sweater. As would this over-the-top Dolce & Gabbana gold midi-skirt, which would definitely make for a memorable entrance.
To keep it lower key, you could start with this Saint Laurent metallic gold striped sweater ($1,090) or Bella Freud’s version ($418), with slightly wider stripes. There’s also a shimmering gold fitted ribbed metallic turtleneck ($325) for spring 2020 from Victoria, Victoria Beckham’s new collection.
Match these knits with soft shimmering gold bottoms like Vince’s new hammered satin straight-leg pants ($359). Accessorize with these gold hoop earrings from Misho ($229), or these Completed Works earrings ($266). They’re called “The Search for Undiscovered Planets,” by the way.
Balenciaga’s BB-logo metallic leather cross-body ($725) is nice little pop of gold. And Cult Gaia’s aluminum bag ($370) is a cool way to bring it all into focus.
For footwear, consider Tabitha Simmons’ Hermione gold croc-embossed flats ($695), Gucci’s Pericles backless gold loafers ($695) or Loeffler Randall’s ‘Posey’ leather espadrilles ($295). Louboutin’s Spike Sock trainers also come in shiny gold ($1, 295).
And if you live in a cold climate, you should definitely consider a dramatic arrival in this Mont Blanc metallic gold down jacket ($873) from Cordova.
3. What to wear to the Super Bowl party: White Base Color
You’re totally allowed to use white as a base color. Especially if you’re in Miami! Here are some ideas on how to pop some red and gold into the mix with breezy-chic white layers.
Start with a light diaphanous top like this “Fruity Red” Willow blouse from Velvet ($141) and pair it with crisp white jeans from Raey.
Or take a comfy white cotton hoodie ($225) and rough it up a bit with Saint Laurent’s slim-fitting leather trousers ($2,890) or Miu Miu’s crackled-leather mini skirt ($1,660) will keep your look from getting too close to cheerleader-chic. So will this suede and leather Proenza Schouler Buckle cross-body bag ($995).
You could go fashion-forward with a chic shorts suit ($695) with an over-sized blazer ($1,595) in vibrant red from Sies Marjan. Add Oscar de la Renta’s octagonal earrings ($290), and a vintage bracelet from Mark Davis ($3,100).
Toss on white sneakers or white ankle boots like these from Acne Studios ($630) and a clean minimalist white tote from Studio Amelia in vegan leather ($430), or a big red tote from Christian Louboutin ($1,690) and you’ll be on-point on Game Day and all spring and summer, too.
4. What to wear to the Super Bowl party: Black Base Color
Those who much prefer a noir base layer (and we count ourselves among them) can nail this idea rather easily. If you’re meeting friends at a bar to watch the game, or hanging with your tech mogul pals in their penthouse lairs, this will definitely get the job done.
Cozy up to a black hoodie ($335) or a fine-gauge black knit cardigan ($833). Or go red with a Rochas ribbed cotton sweater ($628) or a pullover from Cordova ($280).
Pair them with a girly tulle black midi-skirt like this one from No. 21 ($870) or these black leather pants from Saint Laurent ($2,690). Ganni Girls, you should definitely go for this new black leather mini dress ($620).
A minimalist bag like this red Loewe Heel shoulder bag ($950) or this gold Wandler Luni crossbody bag ($578) will nod to the Big Game. We love Jennifer Behr’s bobby pins for their flash of gold ($225). Maybe some gold sunnies, too? Why not – it’s a party!
Gucci’s Princetown slippers ($995) in black, Jil Sander’s dark red ballet flats ($660) or Prada’s chunky Flatform black suede sandals ($710) would be the perfect finish, as long as your Super Bowl party destination doesn’t involve commuting on foot through the snow.
Otherwise just pair any of these with combat boots from Proenza Schouler ($595) or the hot new drop of high-tops from Puma x Balmain ($557). That way, if the game gets really dull, you can easily slip away and hit the club. And no one will ever know . . .
5. Team Logos Rule
Now, we know some fashionistas also happen to be passionate sports fans who want to show the flag for their favorite team. Here’s some of the more fashionable sports merchandise to layer over your existing wardrobe.
Use a hoodie like this vibrant red version from Moncler ($700) or this Ninety Percent + NET SUSTAIN turtleneck ($50) as your base. And then add a hat, scarf, earrings, a watch, or even a suitcase to show your team love. There are lots of options available at Dick’s and on Amazon.
