The chic all-black gowns of 2018 – worn in support of the Time’s Up movement – were a distant memory in the rainbow of colors on display this year.
Yes, we hear those of you who feel that fashion is not the most important area of focus during Hollywood awards season. We don’t disagree – we get it. Film awards are about culture and art and power and who gets to decide what’s good and worthy of note.
But no matter where you come out on such weighty issues, the red carpet can be a master class on how to make your daily fashion choices communicate precisely the message you intend. Plus, they’re fun!

Here are the looks we loved, with photos courtesy of Getty Images. We don’t believe in shaming, so you won’t find any “don’t” photos – just the ensembles that made us feel happy, impressed or intrigued when we saw them. We’re also not getting hung up on who designed what — that whole “who are you wearing?” thing has thankfully been retired.
Here’s what we saw and what we learned. If you want to evoke a certain mood, or generate a specific effect, here’s how it’s done.
1. A dramatic entrance
When you’re a true diva, you know how to make your presence felt immediately upon arrival. Unexpected, striking, challenging, unique – bring it on. Dress to grab the spotlight. And hold it.
2. Classic elegance
Some nights, though, we don’t want or need to be the center of attention. We’re just happy to be there. And in a cacophony of sound, a whisper is often the best way to be heard.
3. The boss ladies
Even on the red carpet, there are ways to communicate a sense of assurance, authority and ease. Sometimes its the degree to which your look is just a bit more relaxed than everyone else’s. Sometimes its a pattern (like hounds-tooth) that transmits gravitas. Frequently, it’s a clear disregard for the male gaze. And sometimes, it’s all about your expression.
4. a fairy tale night
The young and the romantic will often use a black tie occasion to have a princess moment. And why not?
5. Let’s have fun!
Sometimes a big night out is all about joy, and laughter and mischief. We love the spirit that these looks – and these women – exuded on the red carpet. Whichever after-party they’re going to, we want to come!
6. Personal favorites
We’re not here to judge, just to share an opinion, and these were the ensembles that we would most love to have in our wardrobes. Smart, fresh and elegant. For us, these won the night.
