New Year’s Eve is fast-approaching – are you ready? From where to go, to what to watch, to what to wear we’ve covered a number of pressing matters related to the big night. Now, though, comes one more possibly perplexing question: what’s the best way to mark the end of one year and the start of the next one on social media? Our correspondent Abbie Martin Greenbaum has the update on how to say goodbye to 2019 and welcome the new decade and new year 2020 on social media.
‘Twas the Decade of Social Media
If something happened to you this decade, and you didn’t post a picture of it, did it really happen?
This is the decade that marked the ultimate turning point for social media. When it integrated itself so seamlessly (and insidiously?) into our daily lives that it is now fully indistinguishable from every other social interaction.

So as NYE approaches, not surprisingly, social media plays a prominent role in our plans and our actual behavior in the run-up to a new decade and a new year.
‘Cause in 2019, a New Year’s Eve celebration is as public as it is private. As real in the virtual world as it is at the party we’re physically attending. As we head into a New Year and a new decade, everyone is turning toward the Internet as the place to look back, look forward, and to share the festivities with the people they love (and, let’s face it, with a bunch of strangers).
Who’s doing what, and why? If you’re curious, dear reader, come along and see.
How to Welcome the New Year 2020 on Social Media
As these finals days and weeks of the year (and decade!) draw to a close, here are ten ways you can celebrate the end of 2019 on social media. And set the stage for 2020.
1. Participate in the #TenYearChallenge.
On Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and just about every other social media platform, people have been participating in the #TenYearChallenge.
You know what that means. Since it’s the end of a decade, this is your chance to look back and compare where you were ten years ago with you are now. For those of us who came of age during this decade, there could be some pretty enormous shifts that have occurred between 2010 and 2019. And it’s hilarious to look through our feeds and see how much everyone has changed.
2. Share your Spotify Wrapped.
To help us put a ribbon around this year, Spotify has created Spotify Wrapped, the best way to look at your listening history of the last year. It’s time to put all of the data and algorithms to use, and spy on the preferences and favorites of our former selves. Who was our most listened to artist, what was our most listened-to song, and how many hours did we spend listening to music?
And since it is the end of the decade, Spotify is also putting out a special decade edition – so you can check out your personal trends over the last ten years. Of course, make sure to share your results to your Story, and hit play on Spotify’s custom playlist to listen to your favorites from the whole year.
3. Youtube Rewind
You can catch up on a year’s worth of viral videos and memes with Youtube Rewind, a video recap put out by the platform that encapsulates everything that has been popular this year.
If there are hilarious jokes you have forgotten or great memes that you want to revisit, watching this will bring you up to speed. Just in time to leave this year behind and enter a new year of inside jokes on the Internet.
4. Make a Joke about #2020Vision
What makes this year different from almost all of the other years? It is easily used in puns – and catchphrases. And memes. And truly bad jokes.
So go ahead and grab the opportunity to make a joke about #2020Vision. And tag your pictures and posts with the appropriate hashtag. After all, this is the only year the joke will be relevant – you gotta take advantage of that!
5. Use an Instagram New Year’s Filter
If you go to @WowFilters, you can get a fireworks filter to add to your Instagram story on New Year’s Eve.
Whether you’re standing under the sparkles or not, this is a way to make your social media presence feel festive, and to show off how excited you’re feeling – whether you end up at an actual fireworks show or not.
6. Make and Post a Top Ten
As the decade comes to a close, people are looking back and making top ten lists of everything they have loved over the last ten years. Books, movies, albums – you name it.
This has been a decade that saw a lot of change in the world, and looking at the way that change was reflected in the things we love is an easy and fun way to try and process all of that. Just in time to let the last ten years go, of course. Think it over, write it out, and share it with your friends on Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, or any other online platform.
7. Bring on The Roaring ’20’s
If you plan to take and post any pictures on the 31st, you might want to embrace the return of the 20’s.
That means flapper dresses, long strings of pearls, and thematic party goods. It’s time for a renaissance of many people’s favorite aesthetic, and you might want to think about incorporating it into any photos you decide to post on the big day.
8. TikTok 100
Like Youtube Rewind, TikTok 100 is a way to revisit all the viral content you loved (or missed) from the last 12 months.
TikTok became big this decade, replacing Vine as a huge social media platform for video lovers and makers. For a little trip down memory lane, press play on any of these compilations.
9. Make and Post a Prediction
This could be as simple as looking at your horoscope on CoStar, or at the wordsearch meme – which claims that the first three words you spot are what’s coming for you in 2020.
Of course, thinking about where you’ll be in one year is not nearly as jarring as thinking about where you’ll be in ten – but any of these little predictions are a great start, and so much more fun than a simple resolution.
10. More Memes!
If this decade made one thing clear, it’s that memes are not going anywhere. If anything, they’ve just become a more pervasive part of our culture, humor and communication.
So find a picture of Baby Yoda, add a joke about 2020, and wait until the ball drops.
