the deeply satisfying joy of a fantastic coat
Our passion for coats cannot be overstated. What other singular item in your wardrobe can keep you cozy and comfy and make you look polished and stylish at the same time?
If you’re out in the city running errands, you never even have to take it off. And you know what that means. You could be wearing an old t-shirt and sweatpants and neighbors or shopkeepers would be none the wiser!

In fact, they’ll probably compliment you and admire the dashing figure you cut in that flattering coat which hides every imperfection. Throw on a pair of your favorite boots and you’re instantly chic. What’s not to like?
the best chic luxury statement coats this winter
This season is all about the dramatic statement coat: oversized silhouettes, mismatched patterns, downy textures and the leather trench. We’ve already covered the vibrant rainbow of the winter puffer jackets available this season for sporty types, whether on the slopes or on the street.
Now we’re sharing our favorite non-puffer statement coats for the fall-winter 2019-20 season.
1. Oversize Coats
Hemlines are long this season and you need a cocoon-like silhouette to strike the right proportions. Never has wrapping a giant blanket around yourself looked so chic.
This Nanushka wrap coat ($850) in a stunning and refreshing lavender hue is made of wool and silk for a glamorous drape. JW Anderson continues to push design boundaries, creating statement looks punctuated with unexpected twists like this wool and cashmere coat ($1,260) with an oversized shawl color.
From Dries Van Noten’s latest collection, this ombré floral twill coat ($2,060) embodies a feminine sophisticated mood, sure to stand out from the sea of black coats. Oversize coats can be playful too- like this two tone wool coat from MSGM ($1,235) in soft and wearable shades of strawberry cream and camel.
2. Fluffy Textured Coats
Designers are embracing teddy bear dressing and offering effervescent and fun colors and treatments to choose from.
Fashion darling of the the moment, Sies Marjan’s chubby lamb shearling coat ($3,495) in a juicy ruby red will turn every head. Stine Goya draws inspiration from the eclectic style of 60s icons Lee Radziwill and Slim Keith for this exceptionally soft and plush faux fur coat ($580) in the perfect hue of sky blue.
This luxurious Stand Studio belted coat ($700) with tonal-gray, off-white and brown faux fur almost looks like the real thing. Why limit yourself to one color when you could have a few? Mary Katrantzou’s ombré faux fur coat ($2400) is an essential piece for any eccentric dresser.
3. Mixed Materials
A patchwork of fabrications and colors gives these coats an understated luxury- that potent combination not trying too hard and looking sharp at the same time.
This veritable technicolor dreamcoat from Ader Error ($1,256) has just the right pops of color to be wearable without looking too clownish. Launched by fashion legacy Carolina Castiglioni (the daughter of Marni founder Consuelo Castiglioni), Plan C offers this modern and luxurious coat ($4,155) mixing shearling, a hint of lambskin leather and sporty sweatshirt drawstring hood.
The classic trench gets a deconstructed makeover from who else, but Burberry ($4,990)? Denim and cargo styling are given a high fashion bent from Sacai’s parka ($1,640).
4. Plaid
This heritage pattern is surprisingly versatile. It can look refined and lady-like, collegiate and preppy or punk depending on your preferred styling.
This bold tartan check ($940) in classic red and black is detailed with gently frayed trims and Mother of Pearl’s signature faux-pearl embellishments at the sleeves. Ganni’s traditional check ($501) reverses to a black quilted ripstop for a Scandi-style, cool utilitarian look.
We love the vintage essence of Sea’s striking yellow plaid wool coat ($1,195) to keep the winter blues away. Part robe, part cape, Jil Sander’s oversized check creation ($3,890) is crafted from virgin wool with a beautiful, creamy neutral color way that has us dreaming of outdoor fires and snow capped mountains.
5. Leather Trench Coat
Where has the leather trench been all our lives? Sure, we’ve had the black biker jacket and the leather bomber jacket. But up until now, we have never owned (or even considered) a full length leather coat. With head to toe leather dressing all the rage this season, a long belted coat is easier to shop for than finding the perfect-fitting leather pants, no?
Coach’s distinctive leather coat ($795) has an appealing Western styling in a gorgeous wearable mulberry color. We tried on this Saks Potts leather coat ($1,999) at our tour of Forty Five Ten and it made us feel so glamorous. The leather has been upcycled from vintage leather jackets so we can wear it guilt-free.
Alexander Wang blends classic biker and trench styles to create this bad ass coat ($2,470) made from supple black leather. Don’t know what to wear in the morning? It doesn’t matter. This floor length, hunter green calfskin coat from Khaite ($6,500) will cover it all up and make you look like the boss lady that you are.
