what’s happening in pop culture this november 2019?

The countdown to holiday blockbusters is on this month.  There are a slew of new movie arrivals aspiring to be Oscar nominees like The Irishman from Martin Scorcese and The Report starring Adam Driver. 

On the small screen there are two new arrivals in the streaming business hoping to compete with Netflix and its season 3 debut of  The Crown.  Of course, if you are ready to full on celebrate the holidays, you will find a little bit of that too as both A Christmas Carol  and Irving Berlin’s White Christmas hit the stage.   So get ready to watch, listen and stream on as you try your best not to open December’s advent calendar just yet.

The Stockholm International Film Festival celebrates its 30th year.  It’s one of the largest cultural events in the Nordic region with 150 premieres from more than 60 countries.  If you go, be sure to bring along our guide to the city – Nov 6 – 17

Returning to London is the annual UK Film Festival – Nov 19 – 23

Apple joins the streaming service game with four original programs on Apple TV+, among the shows being offered is Dickinson, a period comedy series with a modern sensibility starring Hailee Steinfeld as 19th century writer Emily Dickinson – Nov 1

HBO’s next attempt at epic fantasy is this adaptation of the beloved Philip Pullman books. His Dark Materials follows Lyra (Dafne Keen), a girl with special gifts, who sets out to stop a plot to secretly abduct hordes of children.  Keen stars alongside James McAvoy, Ruth Wilson and Lin-Manuel Miranda – Nov 3 on BBC, Nov 4 on HBO

Disney will launch its Disney+ streaming service this month, and it’s kicking it off with The Mandalorian, the first ever live-action Star Wars television series. Set in the years immediately after Return of the Jedi, the show will focus on a gunfighter in the mold of Boba Fett, portrayed by Game of Thrones and Narcos star Pedro Pascal – Nov 12

Olivia Colman and Tobias Menzies will take over as the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh when  The Crown on Netflix returns this month.  After you binge watch season 3, read the latest good deeds that one of our favorite royals has been up to recently – Nov 17

Just in time for the holidays Irving Berlin’s White Christmas is at London’s Dominion Theatre – Nov 16
