luxurious sweaters for fall winter 2019-20
Of course there are all kinds of sweaters, and all kind of sweater moods and occasions. So we’ve grouped our picks into 10 categories of chic and cozy designer sweaters that are both timeless and totally on-trend. Somewhere in here is the perfect new addition to your wardrobe this fall. Let’s go!
1. Classic Camel.
This lightweight cashmere cardigan from Joseph ($745) is a perfect layering piece, with a slim fit that will work well with almost everything. Altuzarra’s Ness wool sweater ($895) takes classic camel and roughs it up a bit with the addition of black leather harness-like straps on one shoulder. Dries van Noten’s classic Merino wool sweater ($470) is effortlessly luxurious.
As is this elegantly simple cashmere version from Ryan Roche ($619). Theory’s version of classic camel this fall is a ribbed merino wool boucle with an A-line silhouette ($595) that’s extra soft and cozy. And we love this Johanna Ortiz Au Plaisir De Te Voir cashmere sweater ($995). Its name translates to “Pleasure To See You,” and it features a slim fit and a stately Queen Anne neckline (which reflects one of the key trends of the season).
2. Fair Isles.
The beauty of this alpaca and wool Fair Isle sweater from Coach ($350) is that it’s really versatile. The brass buttons and striped collar and cuffs add some freshness, but the neutral palette makes for a timeless wardrobe staple. Isabel Marant Étoile’s Ned Fair Isle sweater ($415) has a relaxed silhouette. Stine Goya’s turtleneck Fair Isle is wool-blend woven with mohair ($350). Frame’s turtleneck ($425) is an instant winter classic.
Stella McCartney’s chunky wool blend version ($1,295) is crafted in Italy. This S Max Mara Agrume sweater ($725) has a relaxed silhouette, a high neck and dropped sleeves.
But the grandmama of all the Fair Isles is this gorgeous specimen from Brunello Cucinelli. The belted cashmere blend cardigan ($6,450) is hand-knitted in Italy. And it whispers “St. Moritz” and “Courchevel” all day long.
3. Shades of Grey.
Isabel Marant’s fog-colored Ivah sweater ($625) is made of mohair and wool blend. Style it with white boots to exude cool-girl Parisian savoir-faire. Rochas’ medium gray mélange crewneck has an embroidered “R” at the chest ($873). Marni’s cable knit charcoal grey wool sweater ($676) has a slim silhouette and a brushed light blue hem panel with side vents.
This Jil Sander Shetland wool cable-knit sweater ($890) is a classic. For a more modern take on grey, Colville has a graphic option. Founded by former British Vogue fashion director and stylist Lucinda Chambers with Marni designers Molly Molloy and Kristin Forss, consider this Colville logo grey wool sweater ($885). And Zimmerman’s Espionage roll-neck wool sweater ($495) has on-trend bishop sleeves and a roll-neck with a side tie. It’s a great match for your favorite midi skirt.
4. Muted Hues.
While Rejina Pyo’s gorgeous Colette draped sweater ($695) comes in a vibrant yellow/tangerine, we love this muted olive colorway. This ultra-feminine sweater has a side panel that you can sweep over your shoulder like a scarf. We are totally bringing this on our next plane trip! Altuzarra’s ‘Shakti’ turtleneck sweater ($995) comes in a similarly luxe muted shade of olive green. It features braided trim on each sleeve that creates little cutouts that show just a flash of skin. And Tory Sport’s relaxed, oversized Merino wool sweater ($228) in navy blue is a highly refined version of your favorite sweatshirt. Also perfect to travel in.
Rejina Pyo is a rising star, and this yummy chocolate brown Lyn turtleneck cashmere sweater ($770) is a great way to sample her collection. Gabriela Hearst’s refined Velimir powder-pink cashmere sweater ($1,700) is guaranteed to look good on everyone. And finally, only Alaïa can take something as bold and graphic as a tiger print and still make a jacquard-knit sweater ($2,330) that’s muted, sophisticated, and authoritative.
5. Candy Colors.
If you’re looking for a color pop to go with your wardrobe staples in white, grey, camel, chocolate brown and black, Isabel Marant’s Jarren sweater in Poppy ($915) or Stella McCartney’s canary yellow wool and alpaca sweater ($825) are great places to start. The Elder Statesman brings the drama and emotion with this cropped red cashmere hoodie ($805).
Bottega Veneta’s wool Ice Blue sweater ($930), this purple turtleneck from Jardin des Orangers ($343), Dries van Noten’s Aqua crew-neck merino wool and alpaca sweater ($495), and this Tibi Airy sweater in Celadon green ($395) just feel fresh, unexpected, and totally right for this fall.
6. Neon.
You will definitely get noticed in this Sies Marjan Nora ribbed merino turtleneck sweater ($895), which has a relaxed fit. Or this one, in orange ($595). Or this aptly-named Acne Dramatic knit sweater in canary yellow ($340).
7. Jewel Tones.
Or perhaps this stunning sunset-hued V-neck orange sweater from MM6 Maison Margiela ($775)? Chloe’s Smoked Red ribbed wool and cashmere sweater ($1,050) is cropped; it’s also a perfect match for the brand’s Mini C leather cross-body bag. FENDI’s refined tulle and knit red cashmere blend sweater ($1,190) is a perfect transition piece. And we can’t stop looking at this Gucci belted wool cardigan in deep rich orange ($3,600).
Regular readers of Dandelion Chandelier will know that we have a Thing for green. But it has to be just the right green. We love this rich Bottle Green turtleneck from Acne Studios ($560). And Simon Porte Jacquemus’ forest-green Ahwa draped ribbed wool-blend sweater ($705). McQ Alexander McQueen nails a key trend of the season with this lush cobalt blue asymmetric sweater ($390).
8. Animal Prints.
Animal prints are always “in,” and this fall is no exception. Moncler’s wool and cashmere spotted sweater ($1,000) would pair perfectly with black leather pants. So would Kwaidan Editions Zebra Jacquard wool and mohair sweater ($1,009). R13’s leopard intarsia cashmere hoodie ($995) has distressed edges and an oversized fit.
Other leopard options? Golden Goose’s leopard jacquard mohair sweater ($555). Madeleine Thompson’s Danny wool and cashmere-blend cardigan ($510). Or if you’re feeling more of a zebra print, consider this strong black and white Delphine wool blend sweater from Isabel Marant ($970).
9. Winter White.
When many people think of a cozy designer sweater, they’re thinking of one in winter white. Victoria by Victoria Beckham’s chunky turtleneck sweater ($495) is ribbed for both texture and warmth. The fit is relaxed, just like this Maje Majik ribbed knit sweater ($265). This ecru Theory cardigan ($595) has whip-stitching down each sleeve and the center back seam for visual contrast.
On the other end of the spectrum, though, winter white can be hot. And edgy. Witness Antonio Berardi’s cold-shoulder ribbed wool and cashmere turtleneck sweater ($885). By Malene Birger’s Geneva sweater ($395) looks innocent from the front. Made from stretchy ribbed-knit, it’s cut for a slim fit and when you turn, you reveal an open-back. Paris-based Chloé Harrouche founded LouLou Studio with the aim of crafting “the perfect basic knit with a twist.” Witness this tie-detailed ribbed wool and cashmere sweater ($350). It features long front ties that can either be knotted or left hanging, to pick up on the asymmetrical trend this season.
10. (Not So) Basic Black
Nili Lotan’s Ralphie cashmere turtleneck is a luxurious wardrobe staple ($450). No one does chic black better than Saint Laurent, and this black over-sized wool blend sweater $1,590, (which channels the cape trend from Fall Winter 2019-20) is an excellent example. Minimalists might want to consider this black cashmere fitted sweater from Rebecca de Ravenel ($715). The hour-glass shape is really flattering, and the exaggerated blouson hem and bishop sleeves make it perfect for pairing with tailored trousers.
For a more feminine and dressy take, Roland Mouret’s Kiruna ribbed turtleneck ($1,195) has a shimmer of Lurex. Ditto this piece from Simone Rocha. Her Gathered wool blend black sweater ($895) features delicate gathers shaped to resemble flowers, and is ribbed at the high neck and cuffs. And Valentino’s ruffled-cuff black cashmere and wool blend sweater ($2,350), crafted in Italy with dropped shoulders, an uneven hem and ruffled sleeves.
