travel in August 2019
Everything old is new again: August celebrates several iconic travel greats making a return to their former glory. This month the long awaited renovation of Raffles Singapore will be unveiled, as well as the Hotel Chateau du Grand-Luce outside Paris. On the other hand, if you’re looking for something completely new, check out the new Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia or take a cruise on one of the two new ships debuting, Scenic Eclipse or American Harmony. And don’t forget the opening of Star Wars Galaxy Edge at Disney World.
food and drink in August 2019
The month of August is a peach. Literally and figuratively. It’s National Peach Month, and it’s also filled with lots of mouthwatering events to attend. Some of our favorites include the 72nd Maine Lobster Festival, the Copenhagen Cooking & Food Festival, the Vermont Cheesemakers Festival and the always messy but fun La Tomatina just outside Valencia. And when we aren’t dining out, you can find us at home trying out some of our new favs in The Vibrant Life: Eat Well, Be Well. We gotta make up for all that drinking and eating out somehow, right?
planes, yachts and autos in August 2019
Summer is full speed ahead this month, with glamorous events like Pebble Beach Automotive Week that includes a Concours d’Elegance and multiple high profile auctions. Outside of the States, you’ll find the Bournemouth Air Festival in the UK, the Sydney International Boat Show, CarFest South in Hampshire and the F1 Hungarian Grand Prix to help satisfy your need for summer speed.
sports and luxury fitness in August 2019
From the wellness centric Wilderness Festival to the “Ascot of the North” aka the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival, the month of August is filled with sporting and fitness festivals to watch and enjoy. It isn’t all about camaraderie and friendly competition though, because there are also some major contests taking place too, like the U.S. Open, the Vuelta a España and the kickoff of College Football to name a few. So get ready to enjoy a healthy dose of competition coupled with feel good vibes in the world of sports this month.
fashion, art and design in August 2019
Following a successful week in Helsinki in July, Fashion Week stays put in Scandinavia this month Copenhagen Fashion Week before heading off to New York in September. Also taking place in Scandinavia this month are Code Art Fair and the biennial Lofoten International Art Festival. Elsewhere, you will find the fourth edition of Japan’s Aichi Triennale, the St. Moritz Art Masters and NYNOW for your fill of all things art and design.
Pop Culture in August 2019
August may not be known for new arrivals in the way that the months of July and September are in the entertainment industry, but this often overlooked summer month actually has plenty of debuts. We’re excited for the arrival of films like the comedy Where’d You Go, Bernadette and the psychological thriller Luce, as well as The Righteous Gemstones on HBO. Other cool goings-on include Tom Hiddleson in Betrayal on Broadway and the 20th anniversary of Summer Sonic in Japan. No summer doldrums here.
the arts and culture in August 2019
The Mostly Mozart Festival and Salzburg Festival both continue their runs this month, and there are also some new festivals kicking off, including the Newport Jazz Festival and the Edinburgh International Festival.
On the visual arts front this month you’ll find a retrospective on Alan Baltrop at the Bronx Museum of the Arts called The Life and Times of Alvin Baltrop as well as an art exhibition examining the 40th anniversary of the beginning of the global AIDS pandemic called United by AIDS—An Exhibition About Loss, Remembrance, Activism and Art in Response to HIV/AIDS at Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst in Zurich. Both make for a meaningful follow up to Pride Month.
what else is going on in August 2019?
Social events
The glamorous annual Hamptons charity events continue on the luxury calendar in August. Paddle & Party for Pink to raise money for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation is on August 3rd in Sag Harbor, and the Bow Wow Meow Ball to benefit the East End Animal Rescue Fund is August 17th.
Patriotic events
August 1 is Swiss National Day, which commemorates the founding of the Swiss Confederation in 1291. Expect fireworks, speeches, and special bread rolls with a small Swiss flag on top. August 9 is National Day in Singapore, commemorating independence from Malaysia in 1965; there’ll be parades, dances and a spectacular fireworks show over Marina Bay in the evening.
Stellar events
Stargazers of the world will be out in force this month. For three nights, August 2 – 4, les nuits des étoiles, (“night of stars”) will be held all over France; over 300 events will invite both amateurs and certified astronomers to contemplate the planet Mars, “the little sister of the Earth.”
Fiery Nights
In one of the best luxury events this August, the summer night will be alight. On August 16th in Nyoigatake, near Kyoto, at the Gozan Okuribi (Daimonji Bonfires), five giant bonfires are lit on mountains surrounding the city at dusk. They burn for about half an hour as a form of prayer and seeing off the souls of the departed for the Okuribi people.
Despite it being high season for summer vacations, there are a few elite gatherings that le beau monde will be stopping in on this month. Luxurious rebellion unfolds at Burning Man in Nevada – Aug 25 – Sept 2. – Attendees build a temporary metropolis, Black Rock City, before sending it all up in flames. This year’s theme is “metamorphosis” and this year’s temporary Temple is called “The Temple of Direction.” Created by Geordie Van Der Bosch, the temple was chosen for its elegant simplicity.
Days to Honor . . . All Kinds of Things
In addition to all of that, August 1st is National Girlfriends Day, the day on which we are to take the time to show our baes, BFFs and besties how much we love them; August 25th is National Kiss and Make Up Day (a potential do-over for those who blew it on the 1st).
August 26th is Women’s Equality Day – the day women achieved the right to vote in the US in 1920 and a chance to celebrate women leaders in every field of endeavor. August 26th is also National Dog Day, a day “for people to recognize the importance of dogs and how they impact their lives on a daily basis.”
It’s literally the dog days of summer, people – stay chill.
