Our list of the best events in arts and culture this August begins with the performing arts. The Mostly Mozart Festival and the Salzburg Festival continue their runs.
And there are also some new festivals kicking off, including the Newport Jazz Festival and the Edinburgh International Festival. Plus the world premiere of The Crucible, one of the most notable ballet performances slated for August 2019.

On the visual arts front, we’re keen to see the Bronx Museum of the Arts’ exhibit The Life and Times of Alvin Baltrop. A related exhibition is opening in Zurich, at the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst. Examining the 40th anniversary of the beginning of the global AIDS pandemic, United by AIDS—An Exhibition About Loss, Remembrance, Activism and Art in Response to HIV/AIDS bookends the Baltrop exhibit. Both make for meaningful follow-ups to Pride Month.

At the top of our list for the best in arts and culture in August 2019 is a work of hip-hop choreography with a highly-acclaimed score. Blak Whyte Gray is back after a sold-out U.S. premiere at Lincoln Center’s 2018 White Light Festival – Aug 1 – 3
The Edinburgh International Festival presents dance, opera, music and theater performances. This year’s festival will feature one of the most innovative ballet performances of August 2019. It’s the world premier of a brand-new narrative ballet, The Crucible, based on the play by Arthur Miller – Aug 3 – 5
The Mostly Mozart Festival continues with a program of the best in art and culture at Lincoln Center. A highlight is Under Siege from renowned Chinese choreographer Yang Liping. It’s a stunning vision of the climactic battle between Chu and Han armies in 202 B.C., an encounter that changed the course of Chinese history – Aug 8 – 10
In another of the noteworthy ballet performances in August 2019, the Boston Ballet returns to Jacob’s Pillow for the first time in over a decade. The troupe is performing new works by choreographic and visual artist William Forsythe. Plus revived classics from Russian choreographer Leonid Yakobson – Aug 21 – 25

The Salzburg Festival classical music concerts continue in August 2019 with performances by the Vienna Philharmonic and Mozart Matinees – through Aug 31
The classical music concerts held every summer, the BBC Proms, continue in August 2019. Catch them at the Royal Albert Hall in London. – through Sep 14
Yo-Yo Ma will perform Bach’s six suites at Tanglewood as part of his two-year global initiative, “The Bach Project.” In it, he performs Bach’s cello suite across six continents. It’s an effort to explore, via Bach’s ability to speak to our common humanity, how music and culture connect us all – Aug 11
The Lucerne Festival brings a number of international classical music stars to the heart of Switzerland – Aug 16 – Sep 15

Productions of La Boheme, Tosca and Madama Butterfly are highlights of the Festival Puccini in Tuscany – through Aug 24
Rinaldo comes roaring back to Glyndebourne this summer with Robert Carsen’s witty and irreverent production – Aug 8 – 24
Tosca is at the Arena di Verona as part of the Arena di Verona Festival – Aug 10 – Sept 6
The 11th annual Summer HD Festival at Lincoln Center will include ten performances from the Met Live in HD. The series is shown outdoors in front of the opera house each night – Aug 23 – Sep 2
4. Best Jazz and New Music Concerts this August 2019
There are numerous excellent jazz concerts on tap in August 2019. For instance, this year marks the 25th anniversary of the R&B Festival at MetroTech Commons in Brooklyn. Concerts take place every Thursday at noon – through Aug 15
In another show-piece jazz concert in August 2019, the Newport Jazz Festival takes place at Fort Adams State Park and the International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino. This year’s artists include Diane Reeves, Corrine Bailey Rae, Herbie Hancock, Kamasi Washington and Cécile McLorin Salvant – Aug 2 – 4
Jazz On The Vineyard celebrates its 9th year, featuring Lalah Hathaway – Aug 10
The 27th edition of the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival is a vibrant celebration of jazz in New York. The fest unites storied veterans and the next generation of jazz stars – Aug 21 – 25

Cut and Paste: 400 Years of Collage at Scottish National Gallery Of Modern Art is the first survey exhibition of collage ever to take place anywhere in the world. Collage is often described as a twentieth-century invention, but this show spans a period of more than 400 years and includes more than 250 works – through Oct 27
William Kentridge’s work is surveyed frequently in Europe and the U.S., but seldom has it been given a proper platform in his home country, South Africa. The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art and the Norval Foundation will mount Why Should I Hesitate? Putting Drawings to Work spanning his full career with more than 40 years of Kentridge’s multifarious artistic production, and showcase early and new works, some of which have never before been on view in South Africa – Aug 24 – Mar 23
With the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion commemorated, the art world is now turning its attention to another marker of queer history: the 40th anniversary of the beginning of the global AIDS pandemic. United by AIDS—An Exhibition About Loss, Remembrance, Activism and Art in Response to HIV/AIDS at Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst in Zurich will look at the ways in which the losses of those times continue to affect the present – Aug 31 – Nov 2
Near Life, 200 Years of Casting Plaster at the Gipsformerei at James Simon Galerie in Berlin, Germany is an exhibition about Berlin’s historical plaster casting facility, which, like Museum Island, was pivotal to the city’s art production and display – Aug 30 – Mar 1

Grouping works of art from various periods, Campo Abierto (Open Field) at The Bass in Miami explores the formal, social and environmental aspects of landscape that have been present, yet rarely examined, throughout Sheila Hicks’ expansive career – through Sep 29
Long under-recognized for his frank, beautiful photographs of the queer underground in 1970’s New York, the late artist Alvin Baltrop has been the subject of newfound interest, thanks in part to his work’s inclusion in the 2015 “Greater New York” exhibition at MoMA PS1. This summer, Baltrop will get his due with a career retrospective called The Life and Times of Alvin Baltrop at the Bronx Museum of the Arts that will include some 120 of his images, including ones from his archive that have never been publicly exhibited – Aug 9 – Feb 7
The sculptural potential of light is the subject of Anthony McCall: Dark Rooms, Solid Light at Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York. The show will feature five large-scale installations as well as early performance films, a slide projection work and works on paper dating back to 1970 – Aug 16 – Nov 7
Historias das Mulheres and Historias Feministas at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo will highlight age-old work by women alongside that of proto-feminist practices and groups. One such group is the Union des Femmes Peintres et Sculpteurs, a congregation of women painters and sculptors who banded together in 19th-century France – Aug 23 – Nov 17

Taking place at Hong Kong’s Massimo de Carlo, American artist McArthur Binion presents a collection of works for the very first time in Asia called McArthur Binion: Hand:Work:II. A contemporary of New York artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Brice Marden and Sol LeWitt, Binion’s works have developed through the decades from gestural abstraction to more colourful and geometric work – through Aug 31
Para Site has a brand new group show at Shanghai’s Rockbund Art Museum this summer. This latest exhibition features the works of 16 artists, exploring the fine line between stealing and sharing in the context of work and how it affects our perception of self identities within the fabric of contemporary society. Bicycle Thieves is the brainchild of writer and curator Hanlu Zhang, who was selected from an international pool of submissions from Para Site’s annual Emerging Curators program – through September 1
