The Best in the World of Luxury Travel this July 2019
This month’s travel calendar offers plenty of opportunities for summer adventures, with new openings in hotels, theme parks, cruise ships and even a new luggage line.
Our favorites include the opening of the Mandarin Oriental CastaDiva Resort & Spa on the shores of Lake Como and the christening and debut of The Spirit of Discovery. Plus the reopening of Hawaii’s legendary Kalalau Trail and the launch of a family friendly luxury waterpark, Jungala, in Mexico.

Top News and Events in Luxury Travel this July 2019
1. Europe
In luxury hotel openings in July, one of the most exciting is in Italy. High in the Ravello mountains, overlooking the Amalfi Coast, lies the newly refurbished Villa Margherita. It’s a secluded residence filled with antiques and rare objects. The property recently opened as an extension of the nearby Belmond Hotel Caruso.
Saga’s new ship The Spirit of Discovery will be officially named by her Godmother, HRH the Duchess of Cornwall. She sets sail on her inaugural cruise from Dover on Wednesday, July 10. She’ll make a series of 11 voyages from Dover this year – July 5
Mandarin Oriental CastaDiva Resort & Spa has opened on the shores of Italy’s Lake Como. Almost all of the property’s 163 accommodations, including 58 suites and two private villas, feature lake views. And the hotel’s spa will be the largest in the area with a hammam-style suite, among other amenities.
The Standard is going international with the opening of its London outpost this month in the historic Camden Town Annex in King’s Cross. The hotel has 266 rooms, some of which include bathtubs overlooking St. Pancras Station. Others have outdoor terraces. There’s also an indoor-outdoor garden restaurant. And a rooftop restaurant overseen by chefs Adam Rawson and Peter Sanchez-Iglesias – opening July 11
Located on Market Street in the heart of historic Edinburgh is the eight-story, 98-room Market Street Hotel. The property will have a top-floor champagne bar with panoramic city views.
2. United States
Severe storms hit Kauai’s Napoli coast last spring and causing the closure one of Hawaii’s most beautiful hiking spots. Now finally after more than a year of rebuilding the legendary Kalalau Trail in Napali Coast State Wilderness Park has reopened for visitors
Celebrate summer in St. Louis at The Last Hotel, a 142-room downtown hotel where you can toast the season at the 10th-floor rooftop with martinis around the pool, before heading to The Last Kitchen + Bar for pre-Prohibition-era cocktails – July 1
Aspen’s former Sky Hotel has turned into a W Aspen. The redeveloped features an outdoor “Wet” deck with a pool, Jacuzzi and fire pits plus a dance floor with views of Aspen Mountain. There is also an underground speakeasy, a restaurant called 39 Degrees 2 and a full-service ski shop on the premises
Upscale Hilton brand Conrad has arrived in the heart of Washington D.C. and features a new club concept called Sakura Club on the 10th floor that will serve gourmet meals and purvey a collection of specially selected Japanese whiskies
3. Asia
Following a complete refurbishment the InterContinental Hayman Island in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef opens this month. Each of the 166 guest rooms, suites and villas will have either pool, jungle or ocean views through massive windows and some of the villas even feature their own private pool – July 1
The Japan-based brand Hoshinoya is set to launch its first property in Taiwan this month with the luxury hot springs resort Hoshinoya Guguan that sits in a valley surrounded by mountains
The PuXuan Hotel and Spa in Beijing has opened in the heart of the commercial district and offers views across the Forbidden City. Unique features include a guarantee that you can check-in at any time during the 24 hours of your stay, while Chinese culture and arts permeate the property and reflect local heritage
Set on Japan’s main island of Okinawa facing a mile of coastline within the Okinawa Kaigan Quasi-National Park, Halekulani Okinawa features 360 rooms with views of the emerald sea and a luxury spa featuring a heat facility using natural hot spring waters – July 26
4. Middle East and Africa
Built on the site of former South African president FW de Klerk’s retreat, the newly opened Lekkerwater Beach Lodge features views of the Indian Ocean that at the right time of year, will provide guests with some of the best land-based whale watching on the planet every July to November, as great pods of southern right whales and their offspring migrate there from Antarctica
In news of other luxury hotel openings this July, the St. Regis Amman has opened in Jordan.
5. Latin America and Caribbean
The Dominican Republic’s famed Jungle Bay Eco Villas have reopened following devastation from Hurricane Maria in 2017. Now, Jungle Bay has been relocated to the Soufriere village of Morne Acouma overlooking a marine reserve
Jungala, a luxury boutique water park with thrilling waterslides, as well as incredible food and beverage options, has opened at the Vidanta Riviera Maya resort in Mexico. It could be a great spot for a family vacation this year
6. New Luxury Travel Products Launching in July 2019
Photographers Magnus Edmonson and India Hobson have published Glasshouse Greenhouse ($35), a coffee table surveying the world’s most wondrous conservatories. They’ve included magnificent examples from all over the world, including England and Singapore – July 2
