The Best in the Arts and Culture in July 2019
From Tanglewood to Ravinia to SPAC, in July some of our favorite orchestras and dance companies move into their summer homes.
This month also marks some wonderful classical, opera, chamber music and jazz festivals, including the Verbier Festival in Switzerland and the Umbria Jazz Festival in Italy.
In visual arts, July marks the arrival of some big names in museum exhibitions that will give your favorite beach some serious competition. Among them? Olafur Eliasson In Real Life at the Tate Modern and Implicit Tensions: Mapplethorpe Now at the Guggenheim.

1. Best Dance Events in July 2019
Les Etés de la Danse in Paris will host the Spanish National Dance Company as they perform Carmen – July 8 – 17
The Mark Morris Dance Group kicks off Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival with the world premier of Sport – July 10 – 13
The New York City Ballet returns to the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. NYCB’s 2019 residency will feature four distinct programs including the story ballet Coppélia, an evening dedicated to Balanchine and Tschaikovsky and more – July 16 – 20
Now in its 31st season, the Vail International Dance Festival features both ballet and modern dance and will open with their annual gala featuring performances by Artist-In-Residence and New York City Ballet ballerina Lauren Lovette, a preview appearance by Cuba’s Malpaso Dance Company and artists from American Ballet Theatre – July 26 – Aug 10
2. Best Classical Music Concerts in July 2019
The Boston Symphony Orchestra opens its summer season at Tanglewood in Lenox, Ma – July 5
The Grand Teton Music Festival in Jackson Hole launches its season with singer-songwriter-piano Michael Feinstein, known as the “Ambassador of the Great American Songbook.” Feinstein will lead his ensemble in a concert of contemporary classics, including works by Gershwin, Sondheim and Sinatra – July 3
Ravinia will host the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for its summer residency and will open with a performance of West Side Story – July 12
The Verbier Festival in Switzerland celebrates its 26th anniversary this year; its programming again pairs young talent with some of the biggest names in strings. There will be almost 60 concerts, ranging from opera to symphonic music to chamber pieces – July 18 – Aug 3
3. Best Opera Concerts in July 2019
The Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, France is now in its 71st year; catch a number of classic pieces such as Requiem and Tosca – July 3 – 22
The Glimmerglass Festival returns to Central New York State. Show Boat will open the festival this year – July 6 – Aug 24
Held in the birthplace of Mozart, the Salzburg Festival offers orchestral, chamber music, opera and theater performances – July 20 – Aug 31
The Bayreuth Festival opens with Wagner’s Tannhauser – July 25 – Aug 25
4. Best Jazz and New Music Concerts this July 2019
The Umbria Jazz Festival is one of the most important jazz festivals in the world, and has been held annually since 1973 – July 12 – 21
The 43rd edition of the Festival de Jazz de Vitoria-Gasteiz takes place in Vitoria, Spain and is part of the International Jazz Festival Organization, which brings together the most important jazz festivals in Europe and the US – July 15 – 20
The San Sebastian Jazz Festival, officially known as the Jazzaldia Jazz Festival, is in its 54th year on the coast of the Basque region in Spain. Artists for this year’s edition include Neneh Cherry, Diana Krall, Joshua Redman, Jamie Cullum, Sílvia Pérez Cruz, Joe Jackson, Atomic, Moppa Elliott, Martirio, Charles McPherson and Houston Person – July 24 – 28
Jazz in Marciac celebrates 42 summers in southwestern France this year. Headliners include Cécile McLorin Salvant, Sting, Gregory Porter, George Benson, Anne Paceo, Chick Corea, Jamie Cullum, and Kimberose – July 25 – Aug 15

1. Best Art Museum Exhibits in Europe, Middle East and Africa in July 2019
This year marks the 50th-anniversary edition of Rencontres d’Arles, a widely celebrated photography festival held annually in the south of France. This special edition will feature a few exhibitions spotlighting its own history—one is a two-person show paying homage to Lucien Clergue, the festival’s founder, and his mentor, photographer Edward Weston – July 1 – Sept 22
The Tate Modern will showcase a 70 piece collection from Takis, highlighting his work’s connections to science, technology and natural phenomena – July 3 – Oct 27
Olafur Eliasson In Real Life at London’s Tate Modern will include installations like Beauty, his 1993 work that combines a spotlight and a curtain of mist to create a rainbow. There will also be an entire section dedicated to the artist’s engagement with social and environmental issues, including his Little Sun project, which aims to bring clean, affordable solar energy to the world – July 11 – Jan 5
Garden of Earthly Delights at Berlin’s Gropius Bau is hosting a survey of contemporary art focused on gardens and growth. Curators Stephanie Rosenthal and Clara Meister have brought together a sculptural installation by Rashid Johnson, a blooming by Maria Thereza Alves, photographic work by Louise Lawler and more – July 26 – Dec 1
2. Best Art Museum Exhibits in North and South America in July 2019
Over the past 12 years, the Clark Institute in Williamstown, MA has built an archive of the paraphernalia produced for the Venice Biennale, including artist editions, books, posters, publicity materials. Spanning the past six editions, Art’s Biggest Stage: Collecting the Venice Biennale, 2007–2019 features promotional materials used to market pavilions at the Biennale by artists from six different continents – July 4 – Oct 14
The Museo de Arte Latinoamericano Buenos Aires will exhibit Leandro Erlich: Liminal, featuring 13 of his disorienting sculptures and large-scale works – July 5 – Oct 27
After Dr. Charles Smith returned from his Vietnam War service, he was troubled by how sacrifices by black men and women were overlooked in his home country, so in 1986 he started to turn his property in Aurora, Illinois, into the African-American Heritage Museum + Black Veterans Archive. He populated it with concrete sculptures of important figures and scenes of history and when he decided to move to Louisiana in the early 2000s, around 200 of these works were acquired by the Kohler Arts Center, which will now displaying them in a single exhibition for the first time inDr. Charles Smith: Aurora – July 14 – June 21, 2020
New York’s Guggenheim will open the second part of its Implicit Tensions: Mapplethorpe Now exhibit which examines his influence on contemporary portraiture and self-expression through works by contemporary artists from the museum’s collection – July 24 – Jan 5
3. Best Art Museum Exhibits in Asia in July 2019
Catch Between the Lines – The Chinese Cartoon Revolution at Singapore’s Nanyang Memorial Hall before it closes and delve into the world of Chinese cartoons in Singapore and discover the correlation it has with the 1911 Revolution in China – through July 7
The summer session of Japan’s Setouchi Triennale opens this month and will focus on exploring and connecting the islands of the Seto Inland Sea, with work spanning 12 islands and two ports – July 19 – Aug 25
