The month of June is the official kick off for summer entertainment. The best new movies in June include X-Men: Dark Phoenix. On the small screen, some oldies but goodies return, including HBO’s star-studded hit Big Little Lies. 

 

June is a big month for the music industry. There are new album drops, music festivals and big concerts, including the start of J. Lo’s It’s My Party Tour tour and the return of Glastonbury Festival.  On the stage you will find many of your favorite tv/movie actors, such as Martha Plimpton in the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Sweat.  Lastly, if you plan on hitting the road for a summer road trip, we’ve got the best new podcasts making their debuts in June.

1. best new movies and film festivals in June

Sophie Turner stars as the telepathic and telekinetic Marvel character Jean Grey in X-Men: Dark Phoenix.  The film is said to be the most intense and emotional X-Men movie ever made. As the culmination of 20 years of the X-Men franchise, we’re betting that this will be one of the best new movies in June – June 7

Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling star in Late Night, a “comedy-themed comedy.” Early buzz is that this is one of the best new movies coming in June. Newbie late-night writer Molly Patel helps talk-show veteran Katherine Newbury face her fears when she learns that her longtime job is at risk – June 7

Set in the peaceful town of Centerville, The Dead Don’t Die follows three local policemen and a morgue worker as they battle the undead.  The Jim Jarmusch horror comedy stars Adam Driver, Bill Murray, Chloe Sevigny, Tilda Swinton and Selena Gomez. With that kind of star power, plus an appearance at Cannes last month, chances are this one of the best new movies coming in June.

Men in Black gets the spin-off treatment with Men in Black: International. The new movie follows Agent M and Agent H as they fight aliens around the world.  Liam Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson and Liam Neeson star – June 14

Edinburgh International Film Festival is the world’s longest continually-running film festival. It has played host to a number of prominent premieres, among them the debuts of award winning flicks like Frances Ha, The Hurt Locker and Little Miss Sunshine – June 19 – 30

Woody and the gang are back again with another high-stakes adventure in Toy Story 4 – June 21

The Handmaid’s Tale returns to Hulu for season 3 – June 5

Twenty-five years after Armistead Maupin’s epic book series detailing the lives and loves of a number of San Francisco residents first hit the screen, Netflix is reviving Tales of the City with much of the original cast and new tales – June 8

Meryl Streep joins the cast of Big Little Lies to find out what really happened to her son Perry in season 2 of the HBO series – June 9

The 73rd Tony Awards will be aired on CBS.  James Corden returns as host for this year’s event – June 9

From executive producer Eva Longoria comes Grand Hotel, a new drama set in Miami that follows a luxurious family owned hotel.  The series will air on ABC and is based on the Spanish telenovela series Gran Hotel – June 17

Among the best new plays in June is the revival of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Sweat. Based on the lives of the residents of a dying industrial city in America, Lynn Nottage’s widely-praised work lands on the West End. You can catch it at the Gielgud Theatre with star Martha Plimpton – Previews June 7, Opens June 12

Be transported to sun-drenched Italy with another one of the best new plays in June. At London Coliseum, you can catch the Broadway hit musical The Light in the Piazza. This production stars Renée Fleming and Dove Cameron  – Opens June 14

Working: A Musical at New York City Center is based on the book of the same name by Studs Terkel that celebrates the unsung nobility of the American worker.  The music is by Stephen Schwartz, James Taylor, Micki Grant, Craig Carnelia, Mary Rodgers and Lin Manuel Miranda – Previews June 26, Opens June 27

The stage adaptation of Baz Luhrman’s 2001 Oscar-nominated movie musical, Moulin Rouge: The Musical! opens at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre – Previews, June 28, Opens July 25

Jennifer Lopez is celebrating her 50th Birthday with the It’s My Party Tour kicking off this month in Phoenix, AZ at the Talking Stick Resort Arena – June 7
