what’s happening in pop culture this april?

April is shaping up to be a dramatic month in the world of entertainment.  It might be the end of the current Marvel era with Avengers: Endgame hitting the theaters. On the small screen, Game of Thrones returns for its last and final season.  We don’t know about you, but we’re really excited for both of these.

The stage will feature not one, but two different versions of Aurther Miller’s All My Sons – one in New York and one London.  Each production features a star studded cast.

Speaking of star studded, Coachella returns to the desert with Childish Gambino, Tame Impala and Ariana Grande headlining.  Finally, learn more about the rise and fall of Elizabeth Holmes in the HBO documentary The Inventor and in the new podcast The Dropout.

The Aretha Franklin film, Amazing Grace, was filmed at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles in 1972. Franklin didn’t want the footage to be shown; the intimate concert is being seen for the first time – Apr 5

Taraji. P. Henson stars as Ann Atwater in The Best of Enemies.  It’s based on the true story of Atwater, a mother turned Civil Rights activist in Durham, North Carolina. She took on C.P. Ellis, a leader of local Ku Klux Klan, to desegregate the local schools – Apr 5

In Her Smell, Elizabeth Moss plays Becky Something, a talented but self-destructive musician. She seems determined to alienate everyone around her, even at the cost of her own band’s success – Apr 12

The Tribeca Film Festival returns to New York City – Apr 24 – May 5

Avengers: Endgame may be the end to the current Marvel era. Or not. Working to undo the havoc caused by Thanos in the last installment, Captain Marvel joins the remaining heroes – Apr 24

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is returning with new episodes on Netflix. This follows its breakout debut season and Christmas special in 2018 – Apr 5

Brie Larson plays a woman named Kit who receives a mysterious invitation. It promises to fulfill her childhood dreams in Unicorn Store on Netflix – Apr 5

Killing Eve returns to BBC/BBC America – April 7

Fosse/Verdon on FX is an eight-episode adaptation of Sam Wasson’s biography Fosse. The production stars Sam Rockwell as legendary director and choreographer Bob Fosse. And Michelle Williams as famed Broadway dancer Gwen Verdon – Apr 9

Game of Thrones returns for its last and final season on HBO – Apr 13

A documentary tracing more than 150 years of African American business history, Boss premiers on PBS nationally – Apr 23

Glenda Jackson stars in the title role in King Lear at the Cort Theater on Broadway; the production is directed by Sam Gold and the cast also includes Jayne Houdyshell and Ruth Wilson. The score is an original composition by the legendary composer Philip Glass – opening night Apr 4

Socrates at the Public Theater traces the philosopher’s growing prominence in democratic Athens. It follows the arc through the military and social upheavals that led to one of the most infamous executions in Western history – Previews Apr 2, Opens Apr 16

Arthur Miller’s All My Sons will receive a revival at  The Roundabout Theater Company. And the cast is top-notch. Annette Bening returns to Broadway after a 30-year absence to star. Tony-winning playwright and actor Tracy Letts joins her – Previews Apr 4, Opens Apr 22

At London’s Bridge Theatre, Maggie Smith stars in A German Life, a new play by Christopher Hampton. The work is drawn from the life and testimony of Brunhilde Pomsel.  Her life spanned the twentieth century; for a time in the 1930’s, she worked as a secretary in Berlin. Among her many employers were a Jewish insurance broker; the German Broadcasting Corporation; and Joseph Goebbels – Previews Apr 6, Opens Apr 11

The Old Vic Theatre in London will host its own production of All My Sons with a star studded cast. Sally Field, Bill Pullman and Jenna Coleman do the honors – Previews Apr 15, Opens Apr 23

At the Winter Garden Theater, a musical version of the supernatural 1988 film comedy Beetlejuice opens. It’s the tale of a couple who hire an exorcist to remove a very naughty ghost from their new house – Apr 25

4. pop music

The Indio desert once again becomes a fashionable hive of the coolest bands and the coolest people with the return of Coachella.  Childish Gambino, Tame Impala and Ariana Grande headline – Apr 12 – 21

Tony Bennett returns to Radio City Music Hall with special guest Antonia Bennett – Apr 13

P!nk’s Beautiful Trauma Tour stops by LA’s Staples Center this month – Apr 15

The Minnesota rapper Lizzo finally has a follow-up to 2015’s Big GRRRL Small World. Her new album is Cuz I Love You, and it marks her major-label debut – Apr 19

The passing of The Cranberries frontwoman Dolores O’Riordan saddened fans everywhere. Though the Irish band will not attempt to continue in her absence, O’Riordan and her bandmates were in the process of recording a new album at the time of her death.  The results of those sessions are collected on In The End – Apr 26

5. podcasts

This real-life case is being made into a movie starring Jennifer Lawrence, but The Dropout from ABC News is a chance to hear the full unbelievable story in a different medium. In 2015, Elizabeth Holmes was declared the youngest self-made female billionaire in America after devising what she said was a revolutionary blood test. The only problem? The test never worked.

The Hurricane Tapes explores the story of Middleweight boxer Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, who was tried and convicted of a triple homicide he didn’t commit.

New to NPR is Throughline, a podcast that promises stories and perspectives often missing from history textbooks.  Topics covered include how the U.S. overthrew Iran’s democratic government. How conspiracy theories shaped American political culture. And the history of black athletes using their platforms to protest injustice. And more.
