Top 10 Picks in the World of Luxury April 2019

Our Luxury Calendar provides a comprehensive overview of the top events unfolding around the world every month. Some are micro-luxuries (like a really good book) and others are on a grand, epic scale. As we polish off our research we always dream a little dream about the entries that most intrigue or excite us – the ones we most passionately want to be a part of. If schedules and money were no object, and we could do anything we like, here are our top picks in the world of luxury experiences and events in April 2019.

It’s hard to narrow the list down to just the top 10 choices, but here goes.

we want to hear:

1. The Dropout

While we wait for the film starring Jennifer Lawrence, we’re keen to hear the new podcast from ABC News, The Dropout. Leveraging the research behind last year’s best-selling book Bad Blood, it’s a different way to learn the story of an incredible rise and fall in American business. In 2015, Elizabeth Holmes was declared the youngest self-made female billionaire in America after devising what she said was a revolutionary blood test. The only problem? The test never worked.

2. Jazz at Lincoln Center

Jazz at Lincoln Center presenting McCoy Tyner and Charles McPherson at 80. The two living legends will join the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis to play brand-new big band arrangements of their iconic compositions – April 5 – 6, 2019

we want to see:

3. Simone Leigh

Loophole of Retreat at the Guggenheim, an exhibit presenting a new body of work by Simone Leigh, winner of the Hugo Boss Prize 2018.  The artist’s work records the long-suppressed histories of black women’s labor and the African diaspora. The Chicago-born, Brooklyn-based sculptor will also enliven the neighborhood near the new Hudson Yards. Her sixteen-foot-tall bronze Brick House will be installed on the High Line at 13th Street.  – April 19 – August 4, 2019

4. Mary Quant

The new exhibit at the V&A in London. Famous for popularizing miniskirts in the 1960’s (with hems as short as her famous bob cut by Vidal Sassoon), the British stylist Mary Quant had a much bigger impact on fashion than she is often credited with. Nearly 150 pieces of clothing and photographs from the Victoria & Albert Museum archives, plus dozens of private belongings owned by Quant, will be on display for the first time everApril 6, 2019 – February 16, 2020

we want to read:

5. Ali Smith’s latest novel

Spring by Ali Smith. From the Man Booker-short-listed author of Autumn and Winter comes the highly anticipated third novel in the acclaimed Seasonal Quartet. This series of stand-alone novels features books that separate but interconnected (as the seasons are).   – Publication date: April 30, 2019

we want to check out:

6. The opening of The Shed

The newest cultural center in Manhattan, The Shed at Hudson Yards. The multi-disciplinary space will host a wide variety of events and exhibits. The first month’s programming includes works by filmmaker Steve McQueen; artist Trisha Donnelly; and a collaborative effort by Gerard Richter, Steve Reich and Avrö Part – Apr 5

7. A yacht race in Antigua

Antigua Sailing Week, one of the most popular sailing events in the Caribbean. Every day there is a different race and a new course. Wednesday is the renowned Lay Day Beach Party – instead of racing, the day is spent at a festive beach party – April 27 – May 3, 2019

8. Tennis in Monte Carlo

The first of three ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments played on clay, the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters.  The tournament brings together top tennis players from around the world, and there’s also a spectacular gala and show at the magnificent Salle des Etoiles Sporting Monte Carlo – April 13 – 21, 2019

we want to check into:

9. A new nature lodge

Lekkerwater Beach Lodge, Natural Selection’s latest property in the De Hoop Nature Reserve in South Africa. Located three hours by car from Cape Town, the intimate resort has only seven freestanding rooms. Each one has sliding glass doors that offer spectacular views of the Indian Ocean. At the right time of year, the hotel promises that guests will be able to watch the whales, who arrive in their thousands, right from the lodge’s deck.

we want a taste of:

10. Spring.

Yes, you’re sensing a theme here, right? We’re specifically talking about the restaurant Spring in London. Helmed by Chef Skye Gyngell, it’s a beautiful dining space in Somerset House, right in the cultural heart of London. We’re enchanted by what we’ve heard about their “Pre-Theater Scratch Menu.” Every dish on the menu is created using ‘Waste’ produce (items considered ugly, misshapen, too big, too small to be sold at a grocer). Or leftovers from the previous evening. At 3 courses for £20, it sounds like a lovely way to start a brilliant evening in London.
