This March in the world of fashion and design
The world is full of beautiful objects, and many of them will be on view around the world this March.
First, in North America, stop by Montreal’s Musée des Beaux Arts for a retrospective on Thierry Mugler. Next, you can drop by the Armory Show, the largest international art show in the US.
Onward to Europe, you’ll find the Christie’s London auction of George Michael’s private art collection. Finally, in Asia take in Singapore Design Week, which features three different shows focusing on the home.

The Musée des Beaux Arts Montréal is hosting Thierry Mugler Couturissime. The retrospective will explore Mugler as both fashion designer and showman – Mar 2 – Sep 8
At the annual BaselWorld event in Switzerland, aficionados of fine timepieces can view the latest innovations from many of world’s best brands – Mar 21 – 26
LA Fashion Week features designers, stylists, celebrities, industry pros and innovative artists from around the globe – Mar 22 – 25
High-end bridal designers present their latest collections in London at the White Gallery – Mar 24 – 26
The Cartier Collection ($425) is a two volume set that traces the brand’s history, showcasing pieces from collectors like Queen Elizabeth and Barbara Hutton – Mar 26
2. art shows and fairs
Armory Week in New York City involves a dozen fairs over the course of one weekend, plus new gallery openings. The four that are the best-established are first, the Armory Show (the largest international art show in the US, now in its 25th year). Second, the Art Show, presented by the Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA, happening this year the last week of February to Mar 3). Third, the New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA) New York show. And finally, the Independent Art Fair – Mar 3 – 10
In addition to the “big four,” you should check out the 18th edition of SCOPE New York, returning to its Chelsea location at Metropolitan Pavilion. Known for presenting groundbreaking contemporary work, SCOPE will welcome 60 international exhibitors this year – Mar 7 – 10
TEFAF Maastricht in the Netherlands is a vast annual fair featuring over 275 dealers from 20 countries. It spans everything from the traditional areas of Old Master paintings to modern and contemporary art. Plus photography, jewelry, 20th century design and works on paper. The exhibition this year will highlight 23 objects from the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden – Mar 16 – 24
The 13th edition of Art Dubai takes place at the Madinat Jumeirah and will include 90 galleries from 40 different countries – Mar 20 – 23
March is Hong Kong Arts Month. Among other events, the city will host the prestigious Art Basel Hong Kong, which will feature 248 premier galleries from 32 countries and territories – Mar 29 – 31

Sotheby’s is hosting a Contemporary Curated Sale that will be preceded by a special all-women artist’s auction entitled By Women, For Tomorrow’s Women organized by Miss Porter’s School in Farmington, Connecticut – Mar 1
Christie’s will offer another high-profile work by David Hockney in London: Henry Geldzahler and Christopher Scott, a 1969 portrait. The estimate is in excess of £30 million (around $37.7 million). It’s the lead lot in Christie’s Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening sale – Mar 7
The 59th annual Antiquarian Book Fair at the Park Avenue Armory will feature over 200 American and international dealers with a vast selection of rare books, maps, manuscripts, illuminated manuscripts and ephemera – Mar 7 – 10
Expect an eclectic mix of some of the UK’s favorite new contemporary and top mid-century experts at Midcentury Modern at Dulwich College. Showcasing the best in 20th-century and contemporary design, the event takes place in a unique Brutalist setting – Mar 10
Christies London is auctioning 75 works from George Michael’s private art collection in a live auction. In addition, 130 further works will be sold in a dedicated online sale. Proceeds will be used to continue the artist’s philanthropic work – Mar 8 – 15
Sotheby’s is hosting the sale of the Collection Marianne et Pierre Nahon. The couple were among the firsts to exhibit the works of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Frank Stella and Andy Warhol in France – Mar 19
4. design shows and conferences
400 galleries from 30 countries will have items on display at the 6th edition of Design Shanghai – Mar 6 – 9
Singapore Design Week features several events for design aficionados. First, the International Furniture Fair Singapore (IFFS). Second, the ASEAN Furniture Show (AFS). And finally, NOOK Asia at the Singapore EXPO – Mar 9 – 12
London plays host to the The Wearable Technology Show, which will feature over 6,000 delegates and 200 speakers and showcase new technologies and emerging brands – Mar 12 – 13
Nairobi Design Week is an annual festival that promotes the Kenyan design community in collaboration with local and international partners – Mar 17 – 23
DesignMarch in Iceland returns for its 11th year. From fashion to furniture, architecture to food design, the event showcases the best of local design – Mar 28 – 31
