Now our correspondent Julie Chang Murphy – after visiting the beauty floor at Saks – shares the best new luxury fragrances this spring 2019. Spoiler alert: think sensual not sweet.

Chances are you probably already have your favorite signature sweet and floral fragrance – something that is breezy and fresh and easy to wear everyday. But what about those dark, introspective winter days? Instead of trying to chase the shadows away with notes of honeysuckle or coconut, why not lean fearlessly in to the hidden glamour, intrigue and opulence of winter?

We’ve compiled a list of 6 new and intoxicating luxury fragrances that celebrate and embrace your enigmatic and sensual side. You there, underneath all those sumptuous layers – read on to find a scent that is a little more complex, a smidge more brooding, and a lot more sexy.

1. Bond St No. 9 – New Bond St

Bond St No. 9’s newest fragrance “New Bond St.” is a “modern, sexy, gourmand oriental scent” that captures this trendy see and be seen block. It envelops the wearer in notes of bergamot, muguet, pepper, cocoa, coffee beans, creamy chestnut, patchouli, vanilla, leatherwood, and sandalwood. And the theatrical red leopard print bottle will surely liven up your perfume shelf. $405/100ml

2. Floraiku – Flowers Turn Purple

Floraiku, created by a pair of French perfumers, is a new unisex fragrance collection inspired by Japanese culture. Their newest fragrance, “Flowers Turn Purple,” has three main components: Basil Oil, Lavender Oil and Amber Wood Oil. Its spicy and woody scent is fittingly dramatic for those days on which we want to indulge our moody side. $350/50ml + 10ml refill

3. Gucci – The Alchemist’s Garden

Gucci has a new collection, available exclusively at their own boutiques and at Saks Fifth Avenue, named The Alchemist’s Garden. The packaging is simply divine. Inspired by the Italian farmacia, they feature delicate hand-drawn floral and fauna and gold detailing on milky, opaque bottles. The most “wintry” fragrance is in the lone ebony bottle, evocatively named, “The Voice of the Snake.” It is inspired by a “serpents graceful movements through the forest” and is based on the mysterious notes of Oud, with Patchouli and Saffron. $330/100ml

4. Diana Vreeland – Empress of Fashion

Capturing the dramatic spirit of famed fashion editor, Diana Vreeland, in a deep garnet bottle comes “Empress of Fashion.” It is sweet and powerful with rose, blackcurrant and vanilla essence mingled with the warm spiciness of saffron and pink pepper and the earthiness of Cypriol. With your knee high boots and coat collars turned up, this perfume will only add to your mystery as you brave the January chill. $250/100ml

Diana Vreeland Empress of Fashion

5. Eric Buterbaugh – Gardenia Oud

Eric Buterbaugh, LA-based floral designer to the stars, has an enticing new addition to his series of floral oud fragrances: Gardenia Oud. A floral with additional notes of Tuberose, Rose and Jasmine, this scent has a sophisticated smokiness provided by Smoked Styrax, Santal Sri Lanka, and Benzoin. $395/100ml

6. Penhaligon – Changing Constance

“Changing Constance,” from British perfumery Penhaligon, is an intriguing cocktail of Tobacco Accord, Vanilla, and Cashmeran, splashed with Salted Butter Caramel and topped with head notes of Cardamom and Pimento. The aroma is redolent of that post-holiday ennui, where we are able to luxuriate in the intimate quarters of our home. $250/75ml

These sublime scents sure are giving us something to look forward to in the frosty weeks to come. Who knows? Once you experiment with the darker side, you might never go back to your fruity florals again!
