Our Luxury Calendar provides a comprehensive overview of the top events unfolding around the world every month. Some are micro-luxuries (like a really good book) and others are on a grand, epic scale. As we polish off our research we always dream a little dream about the entries that most intrigue or excite us – the ones we most passionately want to be a part of. If schedules and money were no object, here’s what we’d do in January 2019. It’s hard to narrow the list down to just 10, but here goes.

we want to hear:

The roar of the crowd at the first Grand Slam of the season: the Australian Open at Melbourne Park – January 14 – 27

we want to see:

The Tate Modern’s retrospective Pierre Bonnard: The Colour of Memory. The exhibit will feature close to 100 works, and highlight Bonnard’s expert use of brilliant color in his intimate, melancholy paintings. – January 23 – May 6

The haute couture and haute joaillerie shows in Paris – January 21-24

Laura Linney in My Name is Lucy Barton at London’s Bridge Theatre. Based on the novel by Elizabeth Strout, Lucy wakes after a hospital procedure to find her mother sitting at the foot of her bed. She hasn’t seen her in years, and her visit brings her daughter back to her desperate rural childhood, and her escape to New York – Previews January 18, Opens January 25

we want to read:

The Dreamers by Karen Thompson Walker. In this new novel from the bestselling author of The Age of Miracles, an ordinary town is transformed by a mysterious illness that triggers perpetual sleep. In an isolated college town in the hills of Southern California, a first-year student stumbles into her dorm room, falls asleep—and doesn’t wake up. we want to check out:

Australia’s Great Eastern Fly-In, where pilots and their friends and families gather from all over the country, and visitors can marvel at the latest in aircraft, air displays or take to the sky – January 12 – 13

Perle Noire  at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in which soprano Julia Bullock, composer Tyshawn Sorey, and the International Contemporary Ensemble reanimate the life of entertainer and civil-rights activist Josephine Baker – January 16

The winter edition of Maison & Objet in Paris, which showcases inspiring finds and creations from design luminaries. Attendees are required to be credentialed professional designers, or students from an accredited school working in interior design or fashion – January 18 – 22

we want to check into:

The Shinola Hotel in the center of Detroit’s historic Woodward Avenue commercial district.  The 129-room property in our hometown is comprised of two downtown landmarks—the former Singer Sewing Machine store and the Meyer Jewelry Building—and three new buildings. A sky bridge installed along the rear of hotel will connect all five buildings. Opening January 2

we want a taste of:

Taste of the South at Blackberry Farm in Walland, Tennessee. It’s an annual celebration of Southern food traditions and advancements benefiting the Southern Foodways Alliance.  The event includes a mix of demonstrations, tastings and talks with Chefs Charles Phan, Alon Shaya, and Cheetie Kumar and Wine Importer Eric Solomon – January 4 – 7
