The city of Miami may get most of the attention this month in Fashion and Design thanks to the arrival of Art Basel and all of the sister shows that come with it. But fret not, friends. There is plenty of other action in store thanks to fun pop ups, great collabs, new store openings and auctions as well as a couple conferences to hit up too.

Aside from Art Basel, a few of our other top finds for the month include New York’s lesser known December Fashion Week, The Birth of Cool at London’s Fashion and Textile Museum and Sotheby’s auction of items from Barbara and Frank Sinatra.  So get ready for a fabulous and festive month of December no matter where you are.

Fashion

Shoppe Object takes over two floors at Brooklyn’s Industry City for the launch of So Holiday! – Dec 1 – 2

Aerin x Johanna Ortiz launches this month.  The collab includes three limited-edition lipstick shades enhanced by vibrant packaging and printed beauty bags

New York’s December Fashion Week is a mix of fall and pre-fall showings.  Alexander Wang will show his fall collection on Dec 1 and Narciso Rodriguez will show his on Dec 3 – Dec 1 – 5

FIT’s Fabric In Fashion explores the role played by textiles in forming the silhouette in Western fashion over the last 250 years – Dec 4 – May 31

This month marks the 10 year anniversary of the Manolo Blahnik Hangsisi pump being worn by Carrie Bradshaw in her big screen wedding.  To celebrate the brand is launching seven limited edition prints inspired by life and love in the big apple this month

If you are travelling to the UK for the holidays, FENDI has opened its first UK travel retail store, located at Heathrow Airport Terminal 4

Sevan Biçakçi: The Timekeeper ($195) explores the imaginative designs and singular craftsmanship of the Turkish jeweler – Dec 4

Just in time for the holidays, Goop GIFT has launched its holiday gift giving concept Americana Manhasset

At London’s Fashion and Textile Museum writer and curator Professor Carol Tulloch will discuss individualized Harlem styles of the 1930s, taking inspiration from her book The Birth of Cool: Style Narratives of the African Diaspora.  She will examine how images of the styled body that emerged during that decade came to symbolize what it meant to be black in America in the 1930s – Dec 6

From Prague With Love: Young Czech Fashion at the Czech Centre in London will feature twelve Czech fashion designers from the Prague’s Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design  and explore the relationship between fashion and art – Dec 10 – Jan 4

Just in time for the holidays Margherita Missoni has teamed up with Splendid on cheerful knitwear

Bedding disruptor Brooklinen goes from URL to IRL with their first-ever pop-up shop in Soho.

Beginning with a chance discovery of vintage frames at an estate sale in the late 1980s, Oliver Peoples was launched as an optical boutique on the iconic Sunset Boulevard. With a culturally distinctive and understated approach to luxury, the brand is rooted in the spirit of California with a global following of tastemakers and eyewear enthusiasts.  Oliver Peoples ($80) invites readers on a visual journey, sharing an intimate experience of California through the lens of the brand’s history.  In celebration of the book release, Assouline and Oliver Peoples have collaborated on a limited edition optical style called The Assouline ($420) with a clip on sun lens and custom packaging that will be available for purchase in Oliver Peoples and Assouline boutiques this month

Kate Spade’s Frances Valentine brand just opened its first brick and mortar store.

The iconic British perfumer Jo Malone has launched Jo Loves – an innovative new scent, bath, body and candle collection

Chronomaster Only: The Super-Chronograph by Nivada and Croton ($125) is the first complete book dedicated to one of the most desirable chronographs of the 1960s, Chronomaster Aviator Sea Diver

Art Shows

Context Art Miami is the sister fair of Art Miami and provides an open atmosphere for meaningful dialogue between artists, galleries and collectors while providing the ultimate platform for the presentation of mid-career, emergent and cutting-edge talent by emerging and established galleries – Dec 4 – 9

Other shows running concurrently alongside Miami Art Week are SCOPE (emerging contemporary art), Aqua Art Miami, INK Miami (works on paper), PINTA Miami (Latin American, Spanish and Portuguese Art), Red Dot (emerging and contemporary galleries), UNTITLED (a forum devised for up to 90 international galleries and non-profit art spaces), PULSE (emerging and contemporary galleries), NADA Miami Beach (celebrating the rising talents from around the globe), SATELLITE (an opportunity for young dealers, artist-run spaces and non-profits to exhibit) and Design Miami (an architecture and design showcase) – Dec 4- 9

At Art Basel Miami leading galleries from North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa show significant work from the masters of Modern and contemporary art, as well as the new generation of emerging stars. Paintings, sculptures, installations, photographs, films, and editioned works of the highest quality are on display in the main exhibition hall – Dec 6 – 9

Design Conferences and Events

The South Florida edition of the International Contemporary Furniture Fair will take place at the Fort Lauderdale Convention Centre – Dec 4 – 6

Design Miami brings together gallerists, designers, curators and critics from around the world to celebrate and promote collectible design – Dec 4 – 9

Chiang Mai Design Week is an annual festival jointly held by creators from different industries, established and upcoming designers, craftsmen, artists and entrepreneurs in Chiang Mai to present design innovations or new projects that cater to the needs of modern living – Dec 8 – 16 

Design conference An Event Apart in San Francisco is focused on web design – founded by Jeffrey Zeldman, the event includes hands-on workshops and discussion on UX, coding and digital design – Dec 10 – 12

Integrating minimalist interiors into bold interpretations of traditional architectural forms, AB Concept has been hailed as one of the most innovative and acclaimed design firms not only in Asia but across the world, thanks to its forward thinking leaders Ed Ng and Terence Ngan.  AB Concept ($195) showcases projects that make the eponymous design house a vanguard in the world of high design  – Dec 28

Auctions and Antiques

Bonhams will host an auction of Fine Books and Manuscripts that includes the works of Eloise illustrator Hilary Knight – Dec 4

Classic Week at Christie’s London celebrates art from antiquity to the 20th century, staged across 13 auctions.  Headlining the sale series is Anthony van Dyck’s Portrait of Princess Mary, Daughter of King Charles I of England, one of the most important European royal portraits to come to auction for a generation and a pair of portraits by Frans Hals – Dec 4 – 14

Two of the world’s art and architecture stars, Theaster Gates and Sir David Adjaye, have collaborated with musician and activist, Bono, to curate the 3rd (RED) AUCTION to support the fight against AIDS.  Centered on the theme of light and the color red, the collection of contemporary art and design will be exhibited and auctioned during Art Basel in Miami Beach and Design Miami.  Sotheby’s will conduct a live auction on the evening of 5 December 2018 at the Moore Building in the Miami Design District, with international bidding available in real-time on their website – Dec 5

Sotheby’s will present property from the estate of Barbara Sinatra across a series of auctions in New York.  Lady Blue Eyes: Property of Barbara and Frank Sinatra will offer a rare window into the personal lives of the famed couple, through a selection of works that Barbara and Frank assembled and lived with together throughout their 22-year marriage – Dec 6

Since 2015, Pierre Bergé & associés, is association with Sotheby’s, have held 3 auctions dedicated to literature – among which, one was dedicated to the 19th Century and music.  This month marks the fourth sale of Pierre Bergé’s library and perfectly demonstrates his eclectic taste.  While the lion’s share naturally goes to literature, other lots reflect his interest in botany, philosophy and politics – Dec 14
