Luxury Calendar: how to have a brilliant November

The Dandelion Chandelier Luxury Calendar is a curated list of events in the luxury world around the globe. Whether your passion is TravelFood and DrinkPlanes, Yachts and AutosFitness and Sports; Fashion & DesignEntertainment; or The Arts, we’ve rounded up everything you need to know to have a brilliant month.

November is a month of remembrance, with Armistice Day and Veteran’s Day being celebrated. It’s also a month of anticipation, as the holiday festivities begin and the holiday lights start to twinkle. But for many of us, November is mostly about the moments spent with family and friends at Thanksgiving.

In the spirit of the month, there are plenty of things to be thankful for in the world of travel in November. The start of ski season in the Alps, for one, plus the openings of the new Treeline Urban Resort in Cambodia, the long-awaited Six Senses Bhutan and the new luxury Lindis Lodge in New Zealand. But we must admit that we are most excited and thankful for the return of many of our favorite resorts in the Caribbean after so many months of closure after the devastation of the hurricanes of 2017.

For many of us, Thanksgiving Day is the Super Bowl of home cooking. And happily, there are plenty of food and wine events happening around the world this month to get us warmed up for the big event.  Highlights include Fire, Flour and Fork in Richmond, Virginia;  the return of the St. Barth Gourmet Fest; the World Food Championships in Alabama; and Gastromasa in Turkey.

The speed machines of the air, land and sea will be on display in November in Bahrain, Miami, Gran Canaria, Thailand and Sao Paulo, to name just a few. Highlights include the always-splashy Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the Red Bull Air Race at the Texas Speedway, the RORC Transatlantic Race that closes out the Royal Ocean Club’s racing season and the Bonhams auction of the oldest known example of the 1900 ‘English Mechanic’ 3HP Two Seater.

In fitness and sports, it’s the perfect moment for some good old-fashioned spectator sports: watching the New York City Marathon, the World Tennis Finals, the Melbourne Cup, and the iconic college football rivalry match-ups going on all month. But if getting in on the action is more your thing, there’s the SweatCon Rally in San Diego and plenty of Turkey Trots and quirky marathons to go around (and help you burn off those holiday treats).

If you haven’t kicked off your holiday shopping yet, now’s the time to get started. November is filled with chic art shows like Artissima and London Art Week, new product launches like the debut of H&M x Moschino and Rachel Minkoff sunglasses and the World Architecture Festival to get your creative and gift-giving juices flowing. So far, our top pick for gift inspiration is the Pink Legacy Diamond up for auction at Christie’s.

If you’re the type who gets cranky when the Christmas music starts to play at the mall, this month’s entertainment offerings should help relieve some of your pre-holiday stress. There are fun new arrivals like Bohemian Rhapsody and The Battle of Buster Scruggs in film, the eagerly-awaited debut of My Brilliant Friend on HBO, American Son on stage and drops from Mumford & Sons and Boygenius.

In the arts, the start of the holiday season ushers in iconic and beloved performances of works like the Nutcracker; Christmas in New York at Carnegie Hall; the return of the Alvin Ailey Dance Company to City Center for its 60th anniversary; and It’s a Wonderful Life at the San Francisco Opera. But it’s not all about the holidays: there are several block-buster openings, including Andy Warhol: From A to B and Back Again at the Whitney; Syria Matters at the Museum of Islamic Art; and Sally Mann at the Getty in LA.

Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, begins on November 7. Spiritually signifying the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair. The celebration includes millions of lights shining on housetops and around temples and other buildings; the main festival night coincides with the darkest, new moon night of the Hindu calendar.

Thanksgiving is celebrated in America on the 22nd, along with many beloved traditions: for the 92nd year, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will take place in New York City. There’s a Detroit Lions game in the NFL. There will lots of food and drink, family gatherings, and expressions of gratitude. And then we hit the mall for Black Friday! Followed by Cyber Monday on the 26th.

By the end of the month, the holiday season will have officially begun: the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting is Wednesday, November 28th. Of course, no one will wait until then to start decking the halls: all month long, holiday lights and decorations will be installed in the glittering cities and charming villages of the world.

Wherever November takes you, we hope it leaves you feeling thankful.
