Best New Events in the World of Entertainment this November

If you’re the type who gets cranky when the Christmas music starts to play at the mall, the November entertainment offerings should help relieve some of your pre-holiday stress. There are fun new arrivals like Bohemian Rhapsody and The Battle of Buster Scruggs in film, the debut of My Brilliant Friend on HBO, American Son on stage and drops from Mumford & Sons and Boygenius. The Stockholm International Film Festival started in 1990 and is one of the largest cultural events in the Nordic region.  The festival presents 150 premieres from more than 60 countries – Nov 7 – 18

Claire Foy plays Lisbeth Salander in The Girl in the Spider’s Web: A New Dragon Tattoo Story – Nov 9

The Battle of Buster Scruggs on Netflix is the latest dark comedy Western from the Coen brothers.  Tim Blake Nelson will play Scruggs, alongside a cast that also includes James Franco, Zoe Kazan and Liam Neeson – Nov 16

Based on a 1980s British TV series, Steve McQueen’s Widows follows a group of women avenging their bank robber husbands’ deaths by going into crime themselves.  The star-studded cast includes Viola Davis, Elizabeth Debicki, Michelle Rodriguez and Cynthia Erivo as the women; Liam Neeson and Jon Bernthal as the late husbands; Brian Tyree Henry and Daniel Kaluuya as baddies; Colin Farrell as a politician; and Robert Duvall and Carrie Coon – Nov 16

London hosts the UK Film Festival – Nov 20 – 24

Michael B. Jordan, Tessa Thompson and Sly Stallone all return for the sequel Creed II – Nov 21

Starring Olivia Coleman as Queen Anne, The Favourite is a wicked battle of wit and manipulation with Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone playing attendants vying for the monarch’s attention – Nov 23

This year marks the 36th Torino Film Festival in Turin, Italy- Nov 23 – Dec 1

The Gotham Awards in NYC are the first honors of the film awards season.  Willem Dafoe will receive an actor’s tribute; Paul Greengrass will receive a director’s tribute; Rachel Weisz will get an actress’s tribute; and Jon Kamen will receive the industry tribute – Nov 26

Just two years after Moonlight comes Berry Jenkins’s adaptation of James Baldwin’s 1974 novel, If Beale Street Could Talk, about a Harlem couple — Selma’s Stephan James and newcomer Kiki Layne — torn apart by a false rape accusation and a racially-biased justice system – Nov 30

House of Cards returns to Netflix for its final season and focuses on Claire Underwood – Nov 2

Julia Roberts makes her small screen debut as a caseworker at a facility that treats soldiers returning from war in Homecoming on Amazon – Nov 2

Outlander returns on Starz and finds Jamie and Claire navigating the dangers of the New World – Nov 4

ABC celebrates 90 years of Mickey Mouse with Mickey’s 90th Spectacular – Nov 4

The 52nd annual CMA Awards are on ABC.  Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley host – Nov 14

The first book in Elena Ferrante’s “Neapolitan” series, about two girls growing up in 1950’s Naples who go on to have a 60-year friendship, gets the HBO treatment in My Brilliant Friend. The show was shot in Caserta, Italy, and uses the authentic Neapolitan dialect – Nov 18

Ben Stiller directs Escape at Dannemora which follows the true story of a New York State prison escape by two murderers, who got a helping hand from a married prison employee. Benicio Del Toro, Patricia Arquette, and Paul Dano star in this Showtime series – Nov 18

On AMC, the suspenseful mini-series The Little Drummer Girl premiers – Nov 19

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will air live on NBC from NYC at 9:00a and finish with Santa’s arrival at noon – Nov 22

The 2018 Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree will be lit, and for the first time the celebration will feature live performances at Rockefeller Plaza, aired live on NBC – Nov 28

The Cher Show opens at the Neil Simon Theater – Nov 1

Academy Award-winner Aaron Sorkin’s new stage adaptation of Harper Lee’s classic novel To Kill a Mockingbird, directed by Tony winner Bartlett Sher, begins previews this month. Jeff Daniels stars as Atticus Finch at the Shubert Theatre – Nov 1

Kerry Washington returns to Broadway at the Booth Theater with Steven Pasquale in American Son – they play an estranged couple looking for their son at a police station – Nov 4

War Horse makes its West End debut at the London National Theater – Nov 8

The Christmas Spectacular starring The Radio City Rockettes opens at Radio City Music Hall – Nov 9

The widely acclaimed National Theatre production of Network – starring Tony, Olivier, Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winner Bryan Cranston as Howard Beale – transfers to Broadway at the Belasco Theatre – Nov 10 – Mar 17

Following a critically acclaimed, sold-out run at the Almeida Theatre, Rebecca Frecknall’s production of Tennessee Williams’ Summer and Smoke transfers to the West End’s Duke of York’s Theatre for a strictly limited season – Nov 10 – Jan 19
