The Dandelion Chandelier Luxury Calendar is a curated selection of events around the globe. Whether your passion is Travel; Food and Drink; Planes, Yachts and Autos; Fitness and Sports; Fashion & Design; Entertainment; or The Arts, we’ve rounded up everything you need to know to have a brilliant month.
The leaves will be ablaze with color, the jack-o-lanterns will literally be ablaze, and the luxury ecosystem will be on fire, as well, with moonlight and midnight adventures galore. Trick or treat? Your call. There’s plenty of both in October.
Here are some of the highlights from around the world this month:
The long-awaited One&Only Nyungwe House resort in Rwanda finally opens in October, as do many fan favorite resorts in the Caribbean, after extensive renovations and rebuilds after the devastating hurricanes in 2017. These include Dorado Beach and the St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort in Puerto Rico, as well as Necker Island.
On Nuit Blanche (the White Night) on October 6, all of Paris will be alight as museums, monuments, cinemas, parks, and swimming pools stay open from dusk to dawn for one night only. The focus for 2018 is to promote the unknown monuments of the capital, as well as to showcase emerging talent in all artistic disciplines.
In the world of food and drink, it’s not just about pumpkins and craft beer this month: there are chocolate, avocado, ramen and seafood festivals, too. The Hawai’i Food & Wine Festival takes place on multiple islands, and the International Alba White Truffle Fair returns.
October is fast and furious for those who love speed machines. You’ll find air shows in Australia, Marrakech and Spain, as well as yacht races and shows in Malta, Miami and Long Island. On the track, F1 makes pit stops in Japan, the US and Mexico; on the road, Porsche celebrates its 70th anniversary with an auction.
In sports, the Major League Baseball playoffs take center stage, and the puck drops on the start of the National Hockey League season. The NBA season officially tips off too. And there’ll be some football games. Elsewhere in the world, you’ll find horse racing in England, France and Australia, cycling in Italy and the Invictus Games in Sydney.
Frieze London and Frieze Masters return to Regent’s Park in London, featuring six millennia of art from around the world. The third edition of TEFAF New York Fall takes place at the Park Avenue Armory, with a focus on fine and decorative arts from antiquity to 1920 – Oct 26 – 31
Take in a selection of Yves Saint Laurent creations sparked by the designer’s fascination with Eastern culture at his atelier-turned-museum during the Yves Saint Laurent: Dreams of the Orient exhibition in Paris.
Inone of the most hotly-anticipated highlights of the 2018 auction calendar, Sotheby’s and Pierre Bergé & Associés will host Pierre Bergé: From One Home to Another, featuring the sale of the extraordinary contents of the various homes of Pierre Bergé and Yves Saint Laurent. Proceeds will go to charity.
October can be notable for for horror and Halloween-themed films. But this month in entertainment, you’ll also find the debut of powerful films like Beautiful Boy and If Beale Street Could Talk, and utterly original television like The Romanoffs.
There’s plenty of drama to behold in the theater, including American Boy starring Kerry Washington on Broadway, and the debut of Eve’s Song at The Public Theater in New York. The month will see new music from Cat Powers, Kurt Vile, Robyn and Neneh Cherry, and a cool new fashion-oriented podcast, Articles of Interest.
Here at home in New York, we can’t wait for the start of BAM’s annual Next Wave Festival and the short but sweet 2-week American Ballet Theater fall season. We’re also keen to see a number of new museum exhibits, including Hilma af Klint at the Guggenheim, Hiroshi Sugimoto at Versailles and Anni Albers at the Tate Modern.
In addition to all of that, of course there’s Halloween on Wednesday, October 31, and you might choose to travel to one of the best places in the world to celebrate the holiday. FYI, the theme for the 45th annual Greenwich Village Halloween Parade in New York is “I AM a Robot!” (which is, interestingly, almost identical to this year’s theme at Burning Man). If you dress as a robot, you gain admittance to a special VIP area at the parade.
Basically, it’s going to feel like a midnight party in the pumpkin patch all month long. Are you ready?
