Best new events in the world of entertainment this October

October can be notable for for horror and Halloween-themed films. But this month in entertainment, instead you’ll find the debut of powerful films like Beautiful Boy and If Beale Street Could Talk and utterly original television like The Romanoffs. 

There’s plenty of drama to behold in the theater, including American Boy starring Kerry Washington and the debut of Eve’s Song at The Public Theater. And also new music from Cat Powers, Kurt Vile, Robyn and Neneh Cherry, and a cool new fashion-oriented podcast. Trick or treat? This month, there’s plenty of both.

Film

The 26th annual Hamptons International Film Festival takes place – Oct 4 – 8

Tom Hardy steps into the role of the fan favorite anti-hero Venom – Oct 5

Receiving its third remake is a Star is Born.  Like the Streisand version from 1976, this one moves the action from movies to the music industry, with Bradley Cooper (also making his directorial debut) taking the role of an alcoholic country singer opposite Lady Gaga (in her first starring role) – Oct 5

The Apollo Theater in Harlem presents the US premier of If Beale Street Could Talk – the story of Tish, a newly engaged Harlem woman who races against the clock to prove her lover’s innocence while carrying their first born child to term – Oct 9

La La Land duo Ryan Gosling and Damien Chazelle reunite to explore a different type of star system in the astronaut Neil Armstrong biopic First Man. Claire Foy plays Armstrong’s long-suffering earthbound wife, and Corey Stoll is Buzz Aldrin – Oct 12

A kindergarten teacher in New York becomes obsessed with one of her students who she believes is a child prodigy in The Kindergarten Teacher on Netflix.  Maggie Gyllenhaal stars – Oct 12

Oscar nominees Steve Carell and Timothée Chalamet go toe-to-toe in Beautiful Boy.  The film is the adaptation of a pair of acclaimed memoirs from David and Nic Sheff. Chalamet plays a son struggling with a meth addiction; Carell is his caring father, who doesn’t know how to help. Bring tissues – Oct 12

David Lynch’s Festival of Disruption returns to the Ace Hotel in LA and and includes music, lectures, film screenings and group meditation – Oct 13 – 14

Television

The Man in the High Castle returns to Amazon for season 3 – Oct 5

Dr. Who returns for season 11 on BBC America – Oct 7

Jennifer Garner returns to television on HBO, where she plays a stressed-out wife who tries to keep her cool when planning a camping trip for her husband and his friends in Camping – Oct 14

The Alec Baldwin Show is a spin-off of sorts from his podcast Here’s the Thing. In the weekly ABC variety show, Baldwin will hold court with celebrities and newsmakers such as Jerry Seinfeld and Kate McKinnon Oct 14

Cult favorite Charmed gets the reboots treatment on CW – Oct 14

The Connor family return to the small screen sans Roseanne in The Conners, and Blackish returns for season 5, both on ABC – Oct 16

The Romanoffs on Amazon centers around a group of people convinced they’re descendants of the Russian royal family. Emmy-winning producer Matthew Weiner (of “Mad Men” fame) created this anthology series, in which each of the eight episodes takes place in a new location with a new cast – Oct 22

Sam Mendes directs The Ferryman at Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre – Previews Oct 2, Opens Oct 21

Kerry Washington and Steven Pasquale star in American Son at the Booth Theater on Broadway. The production explores the gripping tale of two parents caught in our national divide, with their worst fears hanging in the balance – Previews Oct 6, Opens Nov 4

New Podcasts
ESPN’s 30 for 30 Podcast returns to its classic anthology format this season, featuring stories on Jose Canseco, a protest at the New York City marathon, and the legendary 2003 World Series of Poker – Oct 16

The beloved design podcast 99% Invisible has released a new spin-off called Articles of Interest that tackles a broad range of fashion-related topics: the rise of casual wear, the environmental impact of the textile industry, and the suspicious absence of pockets in womenswear.

The Shadows on CBC is a six part serialized narrative that tells the story of a fictitious love triangle, based on the author Kaitlin Prest’s own experiences, from the perspective of all three participants. The story is built on a mixture of improvisation, written scenes and out-of-studio recordings.

Led and produced by This American Life alum Jane Marie, The Dream on Stitcher is a journey into the world of multi-level marketing that boasts a very wide reach: from family get-togethers to social media feeds to remote Midwestern towns to the White House.
