The best in the world of entertainment this September

September kicks off film festival season with the Telluride Film Festival, Venice Film Festival, Toronto Film Festival and New York Film Festival.  

If that’s not enough to keep cineastes happy, there are also some great films hitting theaters this month, including The Children Act, Life Itself and The Sisters Brothers.  

On the small screen, favorites like Big Bang Theory, Modern Family, Empire and even Murphy Brown are returning, though they’ll face stiff competition from newcomers like Maniac, Manifest and FBI.

Onstage you’ll find several big names, including Daniel Radcliffe in The Lifespan of a Fact, Glenn Close in Mother of the Maid and Edie Falco in The True.  

Although music festival season is winding down, there are still a few great ones out there, like the Moon River Festival in Chattanooga and the Long Road Festival in Leicestershire in the U.K. Other musical happenings are new albums from Lenny Kravitz, Paul Simon and Paul McCartney, and live concerts from Drake, The Arctic Monkeys and Childish Gambino.  

Lastly, fan favorite podcast This Is Love is back for Season 2, and this month sees the debut of a live version of Dax Shepard’s podcast Armchair Expert at BAM.

The Telluride Film Festival is held over Labor Day Weekend every year.  This year marks the 45th year for the fest – through Sept 3

In the movie Life Itself, a young New York couple go from college romance to marriage and the birth of their first child — the unexpected twists of their journey create reverberations that echo over continents and through lifetimes – Sept 21

Brothers Eli and Charlie Sisters embark on a mission to kill a thieving prospector in 1851 Oregon in The Sisters Brothers.  The film stars Joaquin Phoenix, John C. Riley, Jake Gyllenhaal and Riz Ahmed – Sept 21

The 56th New York Film Festival, presented by the Film Society of Lincoln Center, will showcase  30 films from around the world including The Ballad of Buster Scruggs from the Coen Brothers and If Beale Street Could Talk from Berry Jenkins – Sept 28 – Oct 14

The Old Man & the Gun is a crime comedy film based on the true-life story of Forrest Tucker, played by Robert Redford. Sissy Spacek, Casey Affleck, Donald Glover and John David Washington also star – Sept 28

American Horror Story: Apocalypse premieres on FX – Sept 12

The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards are on NBC; SNL’s Colin Jost and Michael Che will host – Sept 17
