Let the games begin!  With everything from multiple regional events like the European Championships, the Central American and Caribbean Games and Asian Games to festive atmospheres of camaraderie like the Gay Games and Wilderness Festival, there is plenty to enjoy in August. Other notable happenings include the 100th PGA Championship, the US Open and the kickoffs of Premier League and the NFL Preseason.

Glasgow and Berlin host the inaugural European Championships, a new multisport event bringing together a collection of the continent’s leading sports including swimming, cycling and golf to name a few. To be staged every four years, the European Championships will be a new highlight on the global sporting calendar and will bring more than 3,000 athletes to Scotland and 1,500 athletes to Berlin – Aug 2 – 12

The 2018 Ricoh Women’s British Open will be played at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club Golf Links in Lancashire.  It is the 43rd Women’s British Open, the 18th as a major championship on the LPGA Tour and the fifth at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club – Aug 2 – 5

The 136th Royal Canadian Henley Regatta rowing competition takes place in the city of St. Catharines – Aug 7 – 12

The 100th ever PGA Championship is happening at the Bellerive Country Club, Town and Country, Missouri.  It’s been 26 years since this course hosted its last major – Aug 9 – 12

The Premier League, England’s primary football competition, starts its season – Aug 11

Nantucket Race Week is nine days of regattas, awards ceremonies and parties hosted by Nantucket Yacht Club and Great Harbor Yacht Club to benefit Nantucket Community Sailing.  Highlight of the week includes the Opera House Cup – Aug 11 – 20

The last tennis major of the year takes place in Flushing Meadows at the U.S. Open.  Serena’s baby will turn 1 during the tournament – Aug 27 – Sept 9

Taking place in the harbor and nearby waters of America’s oldest seaport, the Gloucester Schooner Festival honors the major role the fishing schooner has played in the heritage of Gloucester and the eastern seaboard – Aug 31 – Sept 3
