June is coming in fast, with air shows and yacht and car races galore, along with car auctions, too. Our favorites include the Superyacht Cup Palma and the completion of the Volvo Ocean Race following its recent departure from Newport. There are Formula One races in Montreal and France, as well as some great classic car events – including the auction of former Ford director Michael Dingman’s collection and the Classic Car Club of Manhattan’s Autogasm through the Catskills.
Air Expos and Shows:
This year marks the 60th anniversary of NORAD, and there’s no better place to recognize it than at the Borden Canadian Armed Forces Day and Airshow – the birthplace of the Royal Canadian Air Force. The airshow will include Canadian Forces demonstration teams, such as the CF-18 Hornet Fighter Jet, the Snowbirds and the SkyHawks Parachute Team – June 1 – 3
The Rhode Island Air Show will take place at Quonset Air National Guard Base. This year’s show will include the Navy Blue Angels, Sean D. Tucker, Michael Goulian, the Geico Skytypers, Ace Maker Airshows, Mark Murphy flying the P-51 Mustan, and the Shockwave Jet Truck. The US. Air Force F-35 Heritage Flight Team is also scheduled to make its first performance in Rhode Island – June 9 – 10
The 2018 Thunder of Niagara International Air Show will be highlighted by not one, but two formation military jet demonstration teams. They are the world famous US Air Force Thunderbirds and iconic Canadian Forces Snowbirds. Both teams will highlight precision formation aerobatics at speeds approaching the sound barrier and as close to 36 inches apart – June 9 – 10
Yacht Races and Shows:
The Volvo Ocean Race is a yacht race around the world, held every three years. The longest professional sporting event in the world, it started in Alicante, on the southern coast of Spain, last October and will head to Cardiff and Gothenburg before finishing at The Hague – June 30
The 635 mile biennial Newport Bermuda Race is the oldest regularly scheduled ocean race, one of very few international distance races, and (with the Transpac Race) one of just two of the world’s regularly scheduled races held almost entirely out of sight of land – June 15
Showcasing a spectacular lineup of luxury charter yachts, the Newport Charter Yacht Show will return to Rhode Island for its 36th edition. Hosted by Newport Shipyard, the four day event is dedicated exclusively to yacht charter professionals, ranging from agents and brokers to owners and captains – June 18 – 21
Superyacht Cup Palma, Europe’s longest running superyacht regatta returns, presenting four days of spectacular racing against the idyllic city backdrop of Palma de Mallorca – June 19 – 23
The Round Ireland Yacht Race is Ireland’s premier offshore yacht race, held every two years by Wicklow Sailing Club in association with the Royal Irish Yacht Club and Royal Ocean Racing Club. The 704 nautical mile race was first held in 1980 and still retains the original course: “leave Ireland and all its islands excluding Rockall to starboard – June 30
The Victoria to Maui International Yacht Race, the longest offshore sailing race off the west coast of North America, is the pinnacle of Pacific Northwest ocean racing. First contested in 1968, the Vic-Maui runs every second year, starting off Victoria, British Columbia, Canada and finishing near Lahaina, Maui – this year’s race starts June 30 – July 4, and finishes no later than July 20, with a gala Awards Banquet on July 21
Auto Races:
Hosted at the arguably prettiest Formula One race track on the calendar, the Canadian Formula One Grand Prix 2018 in Montreal is one of the best attended motor sports events in the world. Few places embrace their Grand Prix weekend as enthusiastically as the Canadian city of Montreal – June 8 – 10
The Race of Gentlemen, or TROG as it is affectionately called, is a multi-day celebration that pays tribute to the early days of racing. Purpose built pre & post war vehicles flood the beaches and battle the tide during this mechanical commemoration in Wildwood, NJ – June 8 – 10
The Classic Car Club of Manhattan is hosting one of its infamous Autogasms. Participants will drive through the Bear Mountain region for a romp through the twisty, technical corners of the club’s favorite roads. Drivers will rotate throughout the day giving participants adequate seat time in each of the cars – June 19
Located in the South of France at the Circuit Automobile Paul Ricard, the Formula One Grand Prix de France 2018 will be returning after a 10 year stint off the Formula 1 calendar – June 22 – 24
The 10th annual GoldRush Rally (GRX) kicks off in Boston. Participants drive through high profile cities and scenic back roads even shutting down famous landmarks along the way including the Golden Gate Bridge and Las Vegas Boulevard – June 22 – July 1
Luxury Auto Shows and Auctions:
Recognized as one of the premier concours in the country and the largest in the Northeast, Greenwich Concours d’Elegance is unique in that it is two concours back to back. Saturday is the Concours Americana for American cars and motorcycles, while Sunday is the Concours International for imported marques – June 1 – 3
RM Sotheby’s will be auctioning The Dingman Collection in Hampton, New Hampshire. Longtime Ford Motor Company director Michael Dingman had an abiding passion for the company’s iconic flathead V-8 models, as well as an eye for the most exquisite original neon signs and other nostalgia representing the great American Century – June 22 – 24
