Summer 2018 is just weeks away. Is your hair ready? A new season is always a chance for a new ‘do, and we’ve asked our well-coiffured friends and style experts what’s on the horizon in terms of hot new hairstyle trends. Here’s our report.
Fortunately, this summer getting on-trend is going to be easy: natural styles, like wash and go cuts, are proving to be the trendiest. You can even retire your state-of-the art high tech luxury hair dryer if you like, and let the summer breezes do the job. There are, of course, a couple of bold looks for adventure girls, like metallic highlights and rose tones.
Don’t know where to go to indulge in these sunny new styles? Fret not, we’ve also rounded up some of the most luxurious (and seriously good) salons at which to book your next appointment. So get your save button ready, and read on for a sneak peek at the hairstyles that are trending right now.
1. The Lob. What: Rather than a traditional bob a la Anna Wintour, opt for the lob. Getting one doesn’t involve losing length or growing a new set of bangs – rather, it’s all about creating a light and airy vibe. The look is slightly layered and piece-y around the face, creating a sultry yet tousled look. Some celebrity examples include Olivia Wilde, Solange and Selena Gomez, who are all sporting a similar haircut right now. Where to get it: Known for her signature sexy messy chic with a cool downtown edge, Sally Hershberger has salons in New York and Los Angeles, with her latest being a collaboration with Tim Rodgers in NoMad. This newest salon is a 5,000 square foot industrial luxe haven for hair and beyond. Also operating out of the space is the skincare clinic The Face Place, providing top of the line facials. The salon also offers manicures and pedicures too. How much: Cuts begin at $150+; color $150+; highlights $250+; extensions $1000+
2. Bangs. What: Looking for a subtle way to freshen up your signature hairstyle? Bangs are back! They’re a great way to add personality (and a little bit of edge) to your look. We especially love shaggy bangs, due to their low maintenance styling and cool-girl feel. Opt for a more wispy style and part in the center to make them a low stress affair. Where to get it: Twiggy is one of the top salons in Tokyo (and perhaps all of Japan). The salon was founded by Miho Matsuura, who famously styled model and Wolverine star Tao Okamoto’s 2009 bowl cut. Taking a lifestyle approach to beauty, the salon offers personalized services with a contemporary edge. You’ll find head to toe treatments for hair, makeup and nails, as well as a juice bar, personal training sessions, a head spa, reflexology and facial/body treatments – a one stop shop for looking and feeling fabulous. How much: Basic cut JY6,000+; Color JY13,000+
3. Metallic Highlights. What: From shoes to bags to makeup, the metallic look is everywhere this year. And believe it or not, this light reflective trend has found its way into hair – and it’s probably one of the prettiest hair trends we’ve seen in a while. Not just limited to blondes, balayaging your hair with metallic shades like bronze or rose gold creates a sunlit look for dark chocolate browns and deep reds. Where to get it: Josh Wood calls his Josh Wood Atelier Salon in London an “anti-salon.” Rather, we should think of it as “the first class lounge on your way to hair heaven.” Count us in! Wood, a renowned celebrity hair colorist, boasts some of the most sought-after beauty talent in the city due to his special brand of glossy, natural, believable looking color. How much: Tints £80+; Highlights £100+; Balayage £205+
4. Wash-And-Wear. What: Nothing’s more on trend than healthy natural hair with its unique bends and waves. With a great haircut that works with your natural hair texture, a wash and go style will save you time, and keep hair straighteners and curling wands at bay – giving your hair a healthy and happy summer break from all the styling tools and associated heat. Where to get it: Rossano Ferretti (where we get our own hair done) is responsible for one of the most innovative haircutting techniques to date: “The Method” uses patented texturizing scissors that snip about 12% less hair than traditional ones, and work with the natural texture and flow of your hair. Ferretti has 23 salons around the world that one that focus on providing luxurious hair care. Devoted clients include Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Middleton and Reese Witherspoon. How much: Cuts begin at $155, although a cut with Ferretti himself costs $1,500.
5. Rose Blonde. What: In the same way that a rosy flush warms up washed out cheekbones, soft rose gold highlights can also warm up your look. Natural rose gold tones can liven dull blonde color, bringing out a glow in the skin. Don’t worry if you don’t have blonde tresses – brunettes (once pre-bleached) can sport this look too. Where to get it: What do Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce and Katy Perry have in common? Rita Hazan. Hazan is the master behind these famous color chameleons, and she also works her magic on a bevy of in-the-know New Yorkers who frequent her salon, known for its impeccable hair coloring. Her sought-after approach to color translates to flatteringly individual ‘dos without stripey contrast or, as Hazan says “that too-perfect, don’t-touch-me look.” How much: Color $130+
The countdown to summer is on – time to get your tresses in order. Have fun! After all, it’s only hair.
