This month’s travel calendar has us feeling a little rugged. With choices like luxury glamping, blooming deserts, luxury campers and spiritual retreats as options, how could we not? If you prefer your luxury without the side of dust, we’ve still got you covered, though. There are plenty of new options along the seashore to indulge in, too.
The Seabourn Ovation takes its maiden voyage from Venice to Barcelona. Billed as the most luxurious new cruise ship of the year, Ovation will be a sister to luxury line Seabourn’s 600-passenger Seabourn Encore, which just debuted in 2017 – May 5
Heading off into the desert has its perks this month. All month long in Tucson, the Tanque Verde Ranch is holding its annual Desert in Bloom event. Throughout May guests can explore the blossom-covered landscape of neighboring Saguaro National Park which peaks this month. Activities throughout the month include painting the blossoming cacti, learning how to photograph the scenery and excursions in the surrounding desert on foot, bike and even horseback.
The seaside resort Montage Los Cabos on the sweeping shores of Santa Maria Bay in Los Cabos, Mexico opens up this month. Set within the renowned master planned community of Twin Dolphin, the location features 39 acres on the pristine bay and includes 122 guest rooms, suites and casas, along with 52 residences. Montage also promises some of the finest swimming, diving and snorkeling in the region.
The BBC Television Center in west London is the home of the White City House, the latest members’ club and hotel from Nick Jones and the Soho House group. The 45-room property has taken over the top floors of “The Doughnut”, and will feature a chic bar and rooftop pool.
Set on the northern coast of the island, Zuri Zanzibar Hotel & Resort has us longing to visit Zanzibar. This new hotel is home to 55 villas that marry chic modernism with a thatched roof accommodations, most of which offer stunning views over the Indian Ocean. Well known designers Jestico + Whiles have seamlessly weaved together modern tourist needs with environmentally friendly architecture in the unique atmosphere of the Zanzibar islands. While the restaurants offer a fusion of European, Arabic, Indian and African cuisines, the Spice Garden offers guests an opportunity to learn Swahili cooking and about the local spices.
The Six Senses Kaplankaya is located on the Turkish Riviera and is designed to reflect the landscape of rugged rocks, golden beaches and undulating hills covered by wild cypresses and olive trees. The resort has 141 guest rooms and suites, including 66 Ridge Villas and 154 private adjacent residences. With the addition of the massive Spa complex, this newest location is shaping up to be wanderlust worthy destination.
Just in time for the Cannes Film Festival the Hôtel Martinez has reopened. Located on the prestigious beachfront Croisette, Hotel Martinez allows guests to enjoy the ultimate Cannes experience with suites renovated by Pierre-Yves Rochon, who combines Art Déco and contemporary design with the gorgeous colors of the French Riviera. The renowned (and only two Michelin star restaurant in Cannes), La Palme d’Or is the highlight of the hotel, serving dishes made with local produce in an elegant setting. Guests are able to dine on the panoramic terrace overlooking La Croisette and the Mediterranean Sea.
Opening in Santorini this month is Canaves Oia Epitome, a new property in the collection of five boutique luxury hotels from Canaves. The Epitome overlooks the small fishing town of Ammoudi and has access to a beach, which is something of a rarity in Santorini. The hotel boasts an infinity pool, a restaurant and sundowner bar, while its guest suites, equipped with plunge pools, are designed to maximise the sunset views.
Glamping season kicks off at Paws Up, a luxury resort set on 39,000 acres of wilderness in the Garnet Mountains of western Montana. May is the perfect time to visit for hikers, who can enjoy wildflowers covering the surrounding hillsides in addition to long days (the sun sets around 10:00 p.m. in May).
After over 6 months of renovation the Six Senses Kaplankaya in Turkey is set to reopen. With stunning views of the Aegean Sea, this resort blends contemporary design with natural beauty and history. In addition to its breathtaking views, the resort is located within easy reach of many archaeological sites including two of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Singapore welcomes a new hotel this month: Six Senses Duxton, an Anouska Hempel-designed five-star in the city’s Chinatown district. The property has “an opulent Far East vibe” with a black-and-gold color scheme and Chinese calligraphy wallpaper. Its sister hotel, the Six Senses Maxwell, opens only steps away in the fall, and guests will be able to take advantage of the services at both properties.
The Mandarin Oriental has taken over the 26 suite Pink Sands Club located on the tiny island of Canouan in the Grenadines archipelago. Canouan is a quick 25-minute ride away (in the resort’s private jet, of course) from larger locales like Barbados. And thanks to its new superyacht marina, this island is predicted to become the next St. Barts.
Ready for a road trip? Airstream just released its newest camper called Nest. You may know Airstream by its iconic silver gleam, but the new Nest is its first ever fiberglass model. Inside the 16 foot, 7 inch long trailer, there’s room to sleep two, a two-burner stove, a fridge, a microwave, and a bathroom with a shower. There are lots of windows as well as a skylight to keep the cabin feeling light and bright. The trailers start at $45,900.
To celebrate the Van Gogh & Japan exhibition at the Museumplein, which runs through June 24, 2018, the 5-star Conservatorium Hotel in Amsterdam is debuting two new “Van Gogh” suites. Guests can choose which of the artist’s famous works (no worries, they’re just reproductions) adorn the walls, indulge in a Van Gogh-themed afternoon tea, and receive complimentary tickets to the exhibition.
Luggage startup Away has joined forces with the coding camp initiative founded by supermodel Karlie Kloss to create Away x Kode With Klossy. The limited edition collaboration includes two takes on the classic case – a mossy-green “Gigabyte” and gray-purple “Pixel.” Also included are two, brand new products designed specifically for the collaboration – a “Cube Case” for organizing charging cables and a backpack with a laptop sleeve. A portion of the sales go towards supporting scholarship funding for the 1,000 girls, ages 13 to 18, who take part in Kode With Klossy summer camps.
The five day, all female Spirit Weavers is considered the “Burning Man of New Age Spiritualists.” Taking place in Cave Junction, Oregon the event focuses on self care and is meant to cleanse your spirit. This includes no cell service, fermented foods, meditations, herbal workshops and conscious rising rituals – May 31 – June 4
