May’s Food and Wine Calendar provides us with multiple opportunities to both treat yourself and to give back.  From the California Winemasters in support of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to The Taste of Tribeca where our patronage supports lower Manhattan’s public schools, it’s always more fun to indulge when you are doing good for others.  Other fun happenings this month include a landmark wine auction, National Homebrewing Day, a chance to learn some of the secrets of a great tequila and great food festivals in Venice, London, Tulum and Nantucket to name a few.

This month marks the inaugural Venice Food & Wine Festival.  The event will be hosted by the JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa along with FOOD & WINE Editor-in-Chief Hunter Lewis.   The festival will bring together some of the most well respected names in Italian cuisine for three incredible days of cooking demonstrations, wine tastings and culinary experiences – May 3 – 6

In 1988 Congress declared May 7th as National Homebrew Day.  Now celebrated the first Saturday of May each year, this year thousands of homebrewers will brew the same recipes and toast simultaneously at noon Central Time – May 5

The annual Fête du Pain in Paris is a festival of bread where the prize for the best baguette of the year is awarded; held in front of Notre Dame under a 1,200 square-meter tent, you’ll find 6 recreated bakeries, 8 ovens, about a hundred of bakers and no less than 3,000 French traditional baguettes baked per day – can you imagine how heavenly the fragrance must be? – May 5-16

The James Beard Awards, the food world equivalent of the Oscars, will be presented in Chicago – May 7

Head to Brooklyn to Learn the Secret Science of Agave Spirits at The Museum of Food and Drink. Attendees will enjoy some delicious distillates, along with science-laden cocktails – May 10

Frankfurt’s Green Sauce Festival celebrates the concoction of seven herbs native to the region with its 11th annual festival; over 50 different green sauces will be on offer, to be consumed atop boiled eggs, potatoes, or sushi – May 12-19

Sotheby’s is auctioning off some of the world’s most sought after wines in landmark vintages from Bordeaux. The Masterpiece Collection was amassed by a collector renowned for being a true connoisseur in the field of art and wine. Bordeaux classics from four decades form the core and benchmark 1982s feature strongly – May 16

After a quiet off-season, Nantucket Island wakes up every May for the Nantucket Wine and Food Festival, featuring prestigious wineries and showstopping events. Annual highlights include the Harbor Gala, with wines from forty exceptional wineries paired with bites from forty chefs, and “Great Wines in Grand Houses” — tastings and wine-pairing dinners hosted in Nantucket’s grand historic private homes. Dames Déjeuner is a luncheon featuring talented women chefs, women vintners and women sommeliers – May 16-20, 2018

The Museum of Food and Drink Spring Gala takes place this month at the Tribeca Rooftop.  This year’s event is honoring Adam Eskin for his commitment to sustainable sourcing as the Founder and CEO of Dig Inn and David Chang for advancing national dialogue about the intersection of food, ingredients, and cultural identity as the Chef and Founder of Momofuku.  The evening will be hosted by Anne Burrell – May 17

Flavors of Denver is a unique annual fundraising event that brings 20 of the area’s top chefs together to offer signature cuisine to a limited number of guests in an intimate and exclusive setting. Each chef creates a personal menu and prepares a four-course meal, complete with beverage pairings, for a table of 10 guests – May 17

Now in its 36th year, the annual Paso Robles Wine Festival brings together more than seventy producers for winemaker dinners, live music, open-house events at wineries, and more. The Grand Tasting presents local wines by style — whether Bordeaux-style, Rhône-style, or non-traditional blends – May 17-20

The California Winemasters is a perennial Wine Spectator Top 10 Charity Wine Auction at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank.  The event showcases 50 international chefs and 75 of California’s Finest Wineries. “Winemasters” has raised more than $30 million in support of the mission of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation – May 19

Benefiting arts and enrichment programs at local public schools PS 150 and PS 234, the annual Taste of Tribeca is an outdoor culinary festival in lower Manhattan.  The festival features dishes from over 65 of Tribeca’s best restaurants, wine and beer tours of local shops and pubs, family-friendly Kids’ and Sports Zones and live entertainment.  The event is rain or shine – May 19

The Alresford Watercress Festival celebrates the local crop with celebrity chefs, food tastings, and a parade during which children distribute the first of the season’s harvest to festival-goers – May 20

The Tulum Food Spirit & Wine Festival is an intriguing opportunity to experience Mexico’s deep rooted culinary history and stunning beaches – May 22 – 27

This month the New Orleans Wine & Food Experience will celebrate its 26th year.  In its two and a half decades, the festival has raised more than $1 million for nonprofit organizations based in New Orleans (like the Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans), while attracting an impressive roster of local food and chefs, as well as national and international wines. A high point is the Friday night “Royal Street Stroll,” led by the Krewe of Cork, showcasing the street’s art and antique galleries, with wine offerings at each stop – May 23 – 27

Foodies Festival, the UK’s biggest food festival, returns to Syon Park in London with a mouth watering summer festival and the launch of a brand new Musicians Against Homelessness music stage.  At the festival guests will be able to watch Great British Bake Off Winner Sophie Faldo baking live as well as meet Michelin starred chef Atul Kochhar of Benares and world renowned chef Vivek Singh – May 26 – 28

As if you needed an excuse to indulge in this deliciously sweet treat, May 31st is National Macaroon Day – May 31

The Peninsula New York turns 30 this year, and to celebrate the hotel has announced a new Keys to the Kitchen program in partnership with some of New York’s top restaurants, including DANIEL and Jean-Georges. Each experience, bookable through the hotel’s concierge, involves a meal at the restaurant of choice, then a tour of the kitchens, a meet-and-greet with the chef, or a sample of a dish.
