Our March calendar is packed with events and launches, particularly in the worlds of art and design. Lisbon, Seoul, Beijing and LA will host Fashion Weeks, while new books celebrating icons such a Iris Apfel and Dior photographer Paolo Reversi make their debut. There are significant art shows in New York and Hong Kong, and design fairs in nearly every corner of the globe (globetrotter might want to check out the Wearable Technology Show in London and DesignMarch in Iceland). BaselWorld will be showcase the latest in haute horologie. There are major auctions, including 100+ blue chip classic cars at the Amelia Island Sale, and fine jewels from Sotheby’s in London. Plus, not one but two museum exhibits in Paris celebrating the work of legendary Belgian designer Martin Margiela. The Style Council is gearing up for an amazing month. Dior Images: Paolo Roversi by Paolo Roversi is now available and is a stunning visual tribute to the Italian photographer’s celebrated images for the house of Dior
Join Curator Dennis Nothdruft for an up-close and intimate look at Couture Inside Out: 1950s Paris and London at the Fashion and Textile Museum Collection. A rare opportunity to view the ins and outs of couture construction, participants will have the opportunity to examine the internal structure and sewing techniques of couture garments from Dior, Chanel and Balenciaga – March 2
The Palais Galliera fashion museum in Paris will host the city’s first major retrospective of avant-garde Belgian fashion designer Martin Margiela. The exhibit traces his career from 1989-2009, and will include the label’s signature pieces, archival examples of the numerous influences on the designer’s work, and rare interviews – March 3-July 15
96-year old Iris Apfel transcends time and trends, and is one of the most dynamic personalities in the worlds of fashion, textiles, and interior design. Her memoir Iris Apfel: Accidental Icon contains a unique and lavishly illustrated collection of musings, anecdotes, and observations on all matters of life and style, infused with her singular candor, wit, and exuberance – March 6
Paris’s Musée des Arts Décoratifs will showcase La Collection Idéale de Diane Venet, a collection of more than 250 pieces of artists’ jewelry (including Alexander Calder, Jeff Koons and Louise Bourgeois) owned by Diane Venet – March 7 – July 8
Just in time for National Fragrance Week in the UK, chic design powerhouse Proenza Schouler launches its first fragrance, Arizona
Created in 1991, ModaLisboa in Lisbon is recognised as the first independent Fashion Week, and became a pioneer in the global decentralization of the fashion market to other capital cities – March 8-11
’60s Fashion: The Youthquake and Its Aftershocks opens at the Museum of the City of New York, exploring the radical transformation from the styles of the 1950’s to clothes inspired by the cultural and societal changes that defined the ’60’s. New York designers Andrea Aranow and Anna Sui will speak with fashion historian Hazel Clark about how the decade influenced their work – March 14
LA Fashion Week features world class designers, stylists, celebrities, industry pros and innovative artists from around the globe, celebrating creativity and design – March 15-18
Prepare for some serious street-style viewing as Hera Seoul Fashion Week kicks off in Korea – March 19-23
At the annual BaselWorld event, aficionados of fine timepieces and haute horologie can view some of the world’s most renowned watch and jewelry brands’ latest innovations in Basel, Switzerland – March 22-27
Margiela: les années Hermès at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris will showcase the most iconic pieces from the 12 collections that legendary designer Martin Margiela created for the house of Hermès during his tenure. The exhibition will highlight how technical and prescient his work was – for example, the designer employed recycled fabrics, which was unheard of at the time – March 22 – Sept 2
Beijing hosts Mercedes-Benz China Fashion Week – March 25-31
High end bridal designers present their latest collections in London at the White Gallery – March 25-27
Art Shows
Armory Week in New York City involves a dozen fairs over the course of one weekend, plus new gallery openings; its an incredible (and somewhat overwhelming) opportunity to assess the current trends in global culture. The four that are the best-established are the Armory Show (the largest international art show in the US); the Art Show, presented by the Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA, happening this year the last week of February); the New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA) NY show and the Independent Art Fair — March 8-11
Staged at Piers 92 and 94 in New York City, The Armory Show spotlights the best of both 20th and 21st century art and features presentations by over 200 leading international galleries, innovative artist commissions and dynamic public programs; after a hiatus, the Gagosian and Perrotin galleries are back this year – preview night, March 7, show runs March 8-11
In addition to the “big four,” you might want to check out the 18th edition of SCOPE New York, returning to its Chelsea location at Metropolitan Pavilion. Known for presenting groundbreaking contemporary work, SCOPE will welcome 60 international exhibitors this year – March 8-11
For iconoclasts, adventurers and those with boundless energy, here are other cool shows that you could hit during Armory Weekend: VOLTA NY; art on paper; the CLIO Art Fair; SPRING/BREAK; and Collective Design
TEFAF Maastricht in the Netherlands will feature over 275 dealers from 20 countries, spanning the traditional areas of Old Master paintings, antiques and classical antiquities as well as modern and contemporary art, photography, jewelry, 20th century design and works on paper – March 10-18
On the heels of Armory Week comes Asia Week in New York City; all over Manhattan, galleries and museums will feature Asian art, with opportunities to both view and purchase – March 15-24
The Other Art Fair is a leading show for “a new generation of art buyers;” it will debut in the Los Angeles at The Majestic Downtown on March 15-18, showcasing work by 100 hand-picked emerging artists. The London and Sydney editions will take place March 22-25
In Paris, Circulation(s), is an art festival focused on the discovery of young and emerging European photographers – March 17-May 6
The 12th edition of Art Dubai takes place at Madinat Jumeirah, Dubai, featuring 92 galleries from 44 different countries – March 21-24
March is Hong Kong Arts Month; the prestigious fair Art Basel Hong Kong will feature 248 premier galleries from 32 countries and territories – March 29-31
Design and Conference Events
Singapore Design Week features several events for design aficionados, including the International Furniture Fair Singapore (IFFS), the ASEAN Furniture Show (AFS) and NOOK Asia at the Singapore EXPO – March 3-12
London plays host to the The Wearable Technology Show, which will feature over 6,000 delegates and 200 speakers and showcase numerous new technologies and emerging brands – March 13-14
400 galleries from 30 countries will have items on display at the 5th edition of Design Shanghai – March 14-17
DesignMarch in Iceland returns for its 10th year; from fashion to furniture, architecture to food design, the festival showcases the best of local design alongside international names; it begins with DesignTalks, a day of lectures by internationally acclaimed designers and the foremost local design thinkers – March 15-18
Nairobi Design Week is an annual festival that promotes the Kenyan design community, in collaboration with local and international partners – March 18-25
Auctions and Antiques
In London, Christies will be hosting a day and evening event featuring Post-War and Contemporary Art that includes works from Andy Warhol, John Mapplethorpe and Jean-Michel Basquiat – March 6-7
The 58th annual Antiquarian Book Fair at the Park Avenue Armory will feature over 200 American and international dealers with a vast selection of rare books, maps, manuscripts, illuminated manuscripts and ephemera – March 8-11
For the 20th year RM Sotheby’s will host the Amelia Island Sale in Florida at the Ritz Carlton; this year’s event includes an exclusive presentation of ‘A Gentleman’s Collection: The Pride & Passion of Orin Smith’ – March 8-10
Christies will be auctioning select prints and works on paper by Beijing-born artist Zao Wou-Ki online. In 1948, Wou-Ki moved to Paris to pursue art and became friends with Miró and Giacometti, and his subsequent work bridged the divide between Eastern and Western traditions – March 15-23
Expect an eclectic mix of some of the UK’s favorite new contemporary and top mid-century experts at Midcentury Modern at Dulwich College. Showcasing the best in 20th-century design from Britain, Europe, America and Scandinavia along with contemporary pieces for the home, the event takes place in a unique Brutalist setting – March 18
The London Fine Jewels sale by Sotheby’s includes an array of stylish jewels from the 18th through 21st centuries; featured in the sale are pieces from Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Boucheron, Bulgari and Oscar Heyman. The eclectic mix includes an unusual giardenetto brooch by Bulgari from the 1970s, depicting flowering cherry blossom, emblematic of spring and renewal – March 20
