In like a lion, and out like a lamb, or will it be the other way ‘round? March is hard to predict (plus there’s that unfortunate business about the Ides). But come what may, it’s nearly spring in the Northern Hemisphere: time to get focused on ending winter on a high note. Across the globe, there will be events celebrating renewal, forgiveness, fresh starts and flowers. There will be glamorous art shows, horse races, film premieres and food festivals. Women of power and purpose will gather in every corner of the globe. And many of us will embark upon the treasured annual rites of Spring Break.

A small sample of the big events this month? The Bal de la Rose in Monaco, the Orchid Show in New York, Art Basel Hong Kong, March Madness, the Armory Show, the Dubai World Cup, and the Oscars. While these events are celebratory, this year March is also the month when Lent is observed on the Christian theological calendar. In the midst of the revelry, there will be abstinence and sober contemplation. March is a month of many moods.

The South by Southwest (SXSW) conference and film festival in Austin, Texas will feature as keynote speakers Oscar-nominated director Darren Aronofsky; writer Ta-Nehisi Coates; music executive Lyor Cohen; “Godmother of VR” Nonny de la Peña; philanthropist Melinda Gates; Academy Award winner Barry Jenkins (Moonlight); London Mayer Sadiq Khan; psychotherapist and author Esther Perel; and whurley, founder and CEO of Strangeworks, a quantum computing startup. Over two thousand global artists will perform – March 9–18. Wow.

International Women’s Day will be celebrated on March 8 with the theme #PressforProgress. Hundreds of events will be held worldwide. A couple of note: in London, there will be a speed mentoring event for women in local government bringing together female chief executives with women at the earlier stages of their career who are on the path to be future leaders. In Dubai, organizers will host an International Women’s Art Exhibition with 100 women artists from 100 different countries represented. And in San Francisco, the annual Thinking Women’s Comedy show will feature stellar female stand-up comedians, with all proceeds going to organizations that promote equality for women.

The coming of spring in the Northern Hemisphere will usher in several luxurious cultural experiences: Hanami is the Japanese traditional custom of enjoying the transient beauty of flowers, almost always referring to those of cherry or plum trees. Pilgrimages to view the blossoms begin in late March and last until early May. The Hindu festival of Holi will be observed beginning the night of Thursday, March 1st;  also known as the Festival of Colors, it signifies the victory of good over evil and the arrival of spring. For many it is also a day to repair broken friendships. People gather on the streets for a giant color fight – throwing dyed powder onto each other – using the revelry as a chance to connect with others and let go of any past grievances (this should totally be a global event).

The New York Botanical Garden’s annual Orchid Show will run from March 3 through late April; this year’s focus is a series of installations crafted by Belgian floral artist Daniel Ost —each one a living sculpture. America’s National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C is March 20-April 15; a highlight will be Petalpalooza, an all-day event with interactive art installations, games and activities, live music and a fireworks show.

The 64th edition of the glamorous Bal de la Rose, held annually in the Salle des Etoiles in Monte-Carlo, will be held on March 24. The Rose Ball was initiated by Princess Grace of Monaco in 1954, and helps raise funds for her Foundation. A different rose and a distinct scent are selected each year as the ball’s theme; Karl Lagerfeld has overseen the artistic interpretation of the ball for the past six years and will do so again this year.

World Yoga Week begins March 1; the annual International Yoga Festival is held in Rishikesh, India on the banks of the Ganges and at numerous local ashrams through March 7.

In addition to all of that, March is Women’s History Month; Daylight Savings Time begins on March 11th; Mother’s Day in the UK is also on March 11th this year. St. Patrick’s Day is the 17th and the vernal equinox is the 20th. Palm Sunday is March 25th. Wherever the month takes you, we hope it makes you feel as if spring is in the air.
