The luxury crowd will be dropping anchor at elite yacht racing and boat shows this month. The upcoming Superyacht Cup and RORC Caribbean 600 races in Antigua and shows in Miami, Thailand and Dubai have us longing for warm weather, the scent of the ocean, and maritime adventures. Prefer land to sea? There are two major auto shows this month – including the largest in North America – and a classic car show in London. Want to take to the sky? The 2018 Air Race World Championship season kicks off in Abu Dhabi with the Red Bull Air Race. Also taking place in the UAE is the Abu Dhabi Air Expo. And Elon Musk will send a cherry-red Tesla into space in the first test of the brand new Falcon Heavy space rocket. Whether it’s land, sea or air, February is an excellent time to start your engine.
Luxury Auto Shows and Auctions
RM Sotheby’s will hold its fifth classic car auction in Paris, timed to coincide with the annual Rétromobile show – sports, racing and touring vehicles will be on the block – Feb 7-11
First staged in 1901, The Chicago Auto Show is the largest auto show in North America; this year marks the 110th edition – Feb 10-19
The London Classic Car Show is the must-attend event this month for classic car owners, collectors, experts or enthusiasts; bringing together the best dealers, manufacturers, car clubs and products from around the globe, this year’s show will pay tribute to the remarkable motor racing career of Nigel Mansell, a former winner of both Formula One World Championship (1992) and the CART Indy Car World Series (1993) – Feb 15-18
Yacht Races and Shows
The 8th annual Superyacht Cup Challenge features five races held over four days with daily pursuit races along the stunning south coast of Antigua. Warm trade winds and ocean swell produce ideal conditions as sailors from all over the world gather for competitive racing and fun-filled social events including the penultimate Cocktails and Caribbean Night featuring traditional dancers and entertainment – Jan 31-Feb 4
The Miami Boat Show arrives this month at the iconic Miami Marine Stadium Park and Basin – an island oasis with expansive views of Biscayne Bay and the Miami skyline. For the first time ever, the well-known sailing portion of the Miami Boat Show, Strictly Sail Miami, traditionally located in a separate location, will join together at the Miami Boat Show, creating one comprehensive boating event and providing boaters, sailors and dreamers the chance to view, shop and board nearly 1,400 new boats, yachts, sailboats, catamarans and thousands of boating accessories, all in one location – Feb 15-19
The Miami Yacht Show on Collins Ave is an in-water-only display of 500 + of the world’s most extraordinary and uniquely designed yachts and superyachts from the world’s foremost custom boat builders. This year features a show within a show with the new invitation only Superyacht Miami showcase exhibiting the best of the best in world class superyachts. Fingers crossed your invite isn’t lost in the mail – Feb 15-19
More than 60 superyachts, maxis, multihulls and a vast array of racing and cruising yachts have signed up to participate in this years 10th edition of the RORC Caribbean 600 from Antigua and around 11 Caribbean islands. This year’s race will feature two all-women teams – Feb 19
The Thailand Yacht Show returns this month to Phuket’s Ao Po Grand Marina – the gateway to the beautiful emerald green Phang Nga Bay. The event combines the best aspects of yacht charter, boating industry and luxury lifestyle events – Feb 22-25
There is no other marine event quite like Dubai International Boat Show. 2018 marks the 26th anniversary of this world-famous festival. The 5 day show lavishly celebrates the marine lifestyle, with the industries latest and greatest showcased against the spectacular backdrop of the Dubai Canal, Jumeirah – Feb 27-March 3
Air Expos and Shows
The Red Bull Air Race returns for an 11th time to Abu Dhabi and marks the start of the season for a brand new World Championship. The race takes place over the Arabian Gulf’s stunning blue waters and fans will be able to witness all the action from the purpose-built race village on the Corniche breakwater on Corniche Beach. The race features the world’s best racing pilots in a pure motorsport competition that combines speed, precision and skill. It’s sure to be a visual spectacle unlike any other – Feb 2-3
The fifth annual Abu Dhabi Air Expo will feature 300 manufacturers and suppliers showcasing the latest innovations and development in private jet aircraft, helicopters, executive charter services, airport equipment and services as well as over 110 aircraft, from ultra-light to heavy business jets to be explored – Feb 26-28
Finally, in a combination of land, air and space, Elon Musk and SpaceX have announced that they will conduct the first test-launch of the brand new Falcon Heavy rocket; it will be the most powerful rocket currently in operation, and the second-most powerful rocket ever built. The cargo for this launch will be a single $100,000 cherry red Tesla roadster – the plan is that the rocket will ultimately be capable of taking people to Mars – Feb 6
