In the world of fashion and design, the petite month of February brings grand events: Fashion Weeks in New York, London, Milan and Paris; museum exhibits exploring the fashion legacies of Gianni Versace and the Royal Family; midcentury modern design auctions and shows in Palm Springs and New York; art fairs in Cape Town, Geneva, Rotterdam, and Madrid; swanky galas; a city-wide celebration of design in Mexico City; and auctions of erotica and meteorites (and possibly even some erotic meteorites). With all those options, there’ll definitely be something this month that catches your eye.
Fashion.
The Gianni Versace retrospective at the Kronprinzenpalais in Berlin pays homage to the Italian designer’s long-standing presence in Berlin (he hosted his first fashion show in Germany); the exhibit will include items from private collectors and close relatives, including pieces worn by celebrities such as Madonna, Elton John, Prince, and Naomi Campbell – Jan 30 – April 14
The dates for New York Fashion Week: Men’s have been shifted so that the menswear shows run seamlessly just before the women’s shows begin in 10-day long “week” – Feb 5-7
Toronto Fashion Week has re-emerged in partnership with disruptor show Re\set to showcase a street-spirited, multi-platform approach to fashion – Feb 5-7
New York Fashion Week unofficially begins with amfAR’s annual gala at Cipriani Wall Street; this year’s dinner honors director Lee Daniels and W editor-in-chief Stefano Tonchi – Feb 7
The annual BCRF Hot Pink Luncheon and Symposium in Palm Beach, co-hosted by Aerin Lauder, will raise funds for breast cancer research – Feb 8
This edition of New York Fashion Week: Women’s, showcasing fall-winter 2018 collections, will be the last for cool-kid designer Alexander Wang – he’ll start showing in June and December, and insiders say this may herald a significant change in the format of New York Fashion Week itself. Meanwhile, instead of a fashion show, Victoria Beckham will showcase her collection during “intimate presentations” at the James Burden Mansion on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, and Bottega Veneta is skipping Milan to show in New York to celebrate the opening of its new Manhattan flagship store – Feb 8-14
Royal Women at the Fashion Museum in Bath, England will showcase designs worn by successive generations of women in the Royal Family; it’s arranged in a ‘family tree’ layout, displaying clothes worn by Queen Alexandra, Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret – Feb 3 – April 28
Palm Beach winter gala season remains in full force, with the standout evening being the 37th Annual Winter Ball at The Breakers, benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County – Feb 9
Norell: Dean of American Fashion is a large-scale retrospective of the work of one of America’s greatest and most influential fashion designers – Fashion Institute of Technology, New York – Feb 9 – April 14
At London Fashion Week, students from London’s University of Westminster will be the first from an undergraduate fashion course to show on schedule at a major fashion week – Feb 16-20
During Milan Fashion Week, Roberto Cavalli will present its men’s and women’s fall 2018 collections together on the runway; Tommy Hilfiger and Gigi Haddad will unveil their fourth consecutive collection, a see-now, buy-now collection for spring 2018, and Hilfiger will also stage a TommyNow “experiential runway event” – Feb 21-27
Iris van Herpen: Transforming Fashion surveys 15 collections of the innovative work of the Dutch designer; renowned for her use of 3-D printing, van Herpen is widely considered one of contemporary fashion’s most progressive creators, and her recent haute couture in Paris won rave reviews – Feb 24-May 13

Art Palm Springs is expanding this year to a fourth day at the Palm Springs Convention Center; this year the pioneering Southern California artists, Ed Moses and Andy Moses, are being honored as the 2018 Artists of the Year – opening night Feb 15, show runs Feb 16-19
Art Wynwood is the premier winter contemporary art fair presented by Art Miami – Feb 15-19
The Cape Town Art Fair is the leading international art fair on the African continent, showcasing contemporary art from Africa and around the world – Feb 16-18

Design Conferences and Events.
The purpose of Interaction Week 18, organized by the US-based Interaction Design Association, is “to reflect on how technology and design are shaping the world;” it’s being held in Lyon, France this year – Feb 3-8
During Stockholm Design Week, the city is filled with high-profile design events, showrooms and exhibitions showcasing Scandinavian design – Feb 5-11
Helsinki Design Week is the largest design festival in the Nordic countries – Feb 8-10
Palm Springs plays host to Modernism Week, an annual celebration of mid-century architecture and design; this year, over 350 events are planned – Feb 15-25
Off Grid 18 is convened by the Society for Experiential Graphic Design and the Designers Institute of New Zealand – Feb 22-27
Mexico City has been designated the sixth World Design Capital; its the first city in the Americas to receive the title, and is being recognized for sustainable design-led initiatives like bike-sharing, urban gardens, parks and playgrounds. Events throughout 2018 will include exhibits, conferences and installations.
Auctions and Antiques.
Bonhams Knightsbridge hosts its annual Travel & Exploration auction, featuring antiquarian and rare books, atlases and maps, historic photography, important letters, historical documents and illuminated manuscripts – Feb 7
RM Sotheby’s will hold its fifth classic car auction in Paris, timed to coincide with the annual Rétromobile show – sports, racing and touring vehicles will be on the block – Feb 7-11
Space and astronomy aficionados, take note: Christie’s Deep Impact: Martian, Lunar and Other Rare Meteorites online auction runs from Feb 7-14
The Miami Beach Antiques Show is the perfect place to find antique jewelry, furniture and home décor that integrate well with contemporary pieces – Feb 9-12
The JF Chen Collection will be available at Christie’s via an online sale from Feb 7-14 February and a live sale in New York; the Los Angeles-based antiques dealer’s eclectic mix of mid-century modern furniture, decorative arts, lighting and accent pieces have led to his recognition as a master curator – Feb 13
To keep the flame from Valentine’s Day burning, Sotheby’s hosts Erotic: Passion & Desire, an auction of paintings, sculpture, drawings, photography, books, and design representing the human body, in London – Feb 15
The Collection of David and Peggy Rockefeller will be offered for sale in May in New York City at Christie’s; beforehand, the collection is on a global viewing tour that stops this month in London – Feb 21-March 8
