Oh, and there’s a $16 million horse race in Florida. Plenty of ways to burn off those holiday pounds — but sadly, just watching from the couch doesn’t count. Game on.

Art and design start the new year with a wave of shows and auctions on the West Coast, and in Florida, New York, Singapore, London and Munich. The most significant one of them all is, not surprisingly, in Paris. As are the haute couture fashion shows. Men’s Fashion Weeks are on in four different cities, and there are women’s Fashion Weeks in Spain, Copenhagen and Hong Kong. Plus a spectacular watch show in Geneva. It’s high style at the height of winter. Dress accordingly.

January means awards season in Hollywood and in the music business, and its also Sundance Film Festival month. There are some cool plays opening, and several music luminaries are on tour this month, including Khalid, Katy Perry, The Killers and Shakira. Portlandia returns to television. And there’s a new Liam Neeson movie. But we’re most excited to see Taraji P. Henson in her new star turn as Proud Mary. Whatever January brings, we feel sure it’ll be entertaining.

In the arts, a new year can mean taking a hard look back: at Carnegie Hall, there will be a 1960’s retrospective in music; Jazz at Lincoln Center celebrates Benny Goodman; and the Morgan Library will focus on photographs that document momento mori from the late 1980’s. But fear not – in art there’s always inevitably an embrace of the new – this month will see premieres of orchestral works and modern dance pieces. And the debut of an LA art museum exhibit devoted to misinformation (or is it lying?) Consider it a sign of the times.
