the miracle on ninth christmas pop-up bar

Our Food Editor Nicole Douillet arranged for us to pay a visit to a Christmas-themed pop-up bar in the East Village in New York City. It turned out to be one of the most fun adventures we’ve had all holiday season.

Miracle on Ninth Street originated at Mace in 2014. Since then, the wildly popular Miracle on . . . Christmas bar concept has expanded. This holiday season, there will be over 50 Miracle bars in the US, Canada, Europe, Central America and Asia. You can find the full list of them here.

the famous miracle on ninth old-fashioned recipe

One of the most popular specialty cocktails on the menu is the Snowball Old Fashioned. The owner of Mace and the founder of Miracle on Ninth Street, Greg Boehm, has graciously shared the recipe developed by Nico de Soto and Joann Spiegel.

It’s chic and fun to look at, and we can vouch for its excellence. This would make the perfect addition to any party all winter long.

Snowball Old Fashioned from Miracle on Ninth Street at Mace

Ingredients:

2.5 oz. Bourbon
0.5 oz. Gingerbread Syrup**
3 dashes Wormwood Bitters

Method:

In a mixing glass, combine all ingredients with cracked ice and stir well.
Strain into a double rocks glass, zest lemon over drink, then add ice snowball (shaved ice formed into a ball and frozen for at least one hour).

**Gingerbread Syrup

Ingredients:
1100 g. Water
1000 g. Cane Sugar
100 g. Molasses
7 Cinnamon Sticks
8 Whole Cloves
12 Whole Allspice
2 tsp. (4.4 g.) fresh ground Nutmeg
80 g. fresh peeled and minced ginger

Method
Crack or smash the dried spices (do not grind).
Toast dry spices in a dry saucepan over medium-high heat until aromatic.
Cool pan, then add water and bring to a boil; allow to boil for 3 minutes.
Lower heat and add sugar, ginger and molasses and heat again until simmering and sugar has dissolved.
Cool, then pour through a fine mesh strainer to remove graininess of spices, then bottle. (Yield: approximately 1/2 gallon).

There you have it.  A recipe for the perfect old-fashioned to serve this winter. Just in time for your next holiday party. Enjoy. And thanks, Miracle on Ninth!
