What’s up in November 2017? Where will the jet set be touching down? The largest flawless diamond ever to be sold at auction – a 163-carat stone designed by de Grisogono – goes on the block at Christie’s Geneva. The uber-luxurious Mandarin Oriental opens its first Caribbean resort in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The cool-kid foodie event Fire, Flour & Fork, a gathering “for the food curious” gets underway in Richmond, Virginia. Michelangelo at the Metropolitan Museum of Art promises to be the blockbuster show of the season in Manhattan. The Louvre Abu Dhabi makes its long-awaited debut, and the F1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is vying for first place as the splashiest event of the month.  Prospect 4 New Orleans coincides with the city’s tricentennial, and features a new work by Kara Walker. The New York City Marathon brings over 50,000 to the 5 boroughs. Call Me by Your Name is one of the buzziest films of the month.

What else is going on? Leaders from around the world have gathered to share ideas at the inaugural Obama Foundation Fall Summit in Chicago, hosted by former President and Mrs. Obama; topics will range from communicating across differences, to art and culture’s role in creating productive cities, and understanding race in relation to one’s civic identity. Speakers include Prince Harry; Former Prime Minister of Italy Matteo Renzi; Bahia Shebab, artist; Brian Alexander, journalist and author; Elizabeth Alexander, poet and author; and artist Theaster Gates.

In addition to looking forward, November is traditionally a month of remembrance. In Mexico, the Day of the Dead is on November 2nd, but the celebration begins on the first day of the month. It coincides with the Christian celebration of All Saints’ Day, which focuses on gathering to pray for and remember those who have died.  The first day of the month is also Armistice Day in France. In London, Armistice Day, also known as Remembrance Day or sometimes Poppy Day, is commemorated on November 11th. In America, that’s Veteran’s Day. That’s because on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, the guns of the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare during the First World War. In many parts of the world, people observe a two-minute silence at 11:00 am to remember those who lost their lives during the First World War as well as in more recent conflicts.

In London, Bonfire Night a.k.a. Fireworks Night, a.k.a Guy Fawkes Night traditionally marks the anniversary of the end of the plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605. The saying goes: Remember, remember the fifth of November (the main fireworks take place on November 5, but events will run before and afterwards).

It’s also a month of celebrating national culture and heritage. In Japan, November 3 is a national holiday known as Culture Day. St Andrew’s Day, a celebration of the patron saint of Scotland and the country’s official national day, is November 30th.

And of course, November is a month for expressing gratitude. Thanksgiving is celebrated in America on the 23rd and some traditions never seem to change: for the 91st year, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will take place on Broadway, and the Detroit Lions will play on Thanksgiving Day. And then we hit the mall for Black Friday! Followed by Cyber Monday on the 27th.

And then, the holiday season will officially begin: the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting is Wednesday, November 29th. Of course, no one will wait until then to start decking the halls: all month long, holiday lights and decorations will be installed in the glittering cities and charming villages of the world.

Wherever November takes you, we hope it leaves you feeling thankful.
