  • There’s a happy buzz in London this month about the Serpentine Pavilion installation; every summer, one accomplished architect who has yet to create work in the United Kingdom is asked to build a temporary shelter. This year’s offering is designed by Francis Kéré—the first pavilion designed by an African architect to grace Kensington Gardens. His project is composed of a series of curving blue walls shaded by an elliptical cantilevering wood and steel canopy. It’s a must-see – through October

  • Bonhams auctions California and Western paintings and sculpture in LA – Aug 1
  • The Melbourne Art Fair returns as the region’s most significant commercial platform for Australasian contemporary art – Aug 2–5
  • ArtCrush at the Aspen Art Museum always draws a glittering crowd – Aug 2-4
  • Art Aspen is at the Aspen Ice Garden – opening night, Aug 3, art fair is Aug 4-6
  • The Seattle Art Fair is at CenturyLink Field Event Center (WaMu Theater) – Aug 3-6
  • The Sapporo International Art Festival is Aug 6 – Oct 1
  • The 42nd edition of art and antique fair Art Nocturne Knocke, is one of the most interesting arts fairs of the European summer season, is in Knokke-Heist, Belgium – Aug 10 – 15
  • Converge 45: YOU IN MIND, brings artists, curators, and collectors to Portland for a series of conversations – Aug 9 – 12
  • dOGUMENTA bills itself as “America’s first art show for dogs:” low to the ground, and accommodating their limited color perception; it’s the brainchild of art critic Jessica Dawson, who was inspired by her dog Rocky’s apparent enthusiasm for art in New York galleries; catch it at at the Waterfront Plaza at Brookfield Place in downtown Manhattan – Aug 11–13
  • The theme of Copenhagen Art Week this year is SOUND & VISION, and the event will combine contemporary art with “an extravaganza of sound.” The usual array of exhibitions will be supplemented by concerts and musical performances – Aug 25 – Sep 3
  • SP-Arte/Foto was founded in 2007 by Fernanda Feitosa and is considered one of the most important photography shows in Latin America – Aug 23 – 27
  • International art fair ART-O-RAMA takes place annually during the last weekend in August in Marseilles; it’s known for its intimate scale and innovative format, in which each gallery or solo artist creates a booth that is itself a work of art reflecting that year’s theme – Aug 25 – 27
  • St. Moritz Art Masters 10th edition is Aug 25 – Sep 3
  • The second edition of the new Scandinavian international art fair, Code 2, returns to Bella Center in Copenhagen, presenting leading as well as emerging galleries from Europe and the Americas – Aug 31 – Sep 2

Fashion and Beauty.

  • Saks Fifth Avenue’s New York flagship celebrates 10 years of 10022-SHOE, its mammoth shoe salon – there’ll be exclusive offerings from Manolo and Jimmy Choo – Aug 1
  • Luxury brand Moncler teams with LA artist and designer Greg Lauren for a 572-piece line of extremely cool outerwear (given the buzz, grab them while you can) – Aug 1
  • J Brand jeans and British designer Bella Freud team up for a capsule collection of 25 pieces celebrating a tomboy-‘70s vibe – Aug 1
  • Lancôme pairs with French designer Olympia Le-Tan for a makeup collaboration: an embroidered clutch filled with a palette of eye shadow, blush and lipstick – Aug 1
  • Copenhagen Fashion Week will see all eyes on rising-star designer Cecilie Bahnsen and on contemporary brand Ganni – Aug 8-12
  • Rag & Bone celebrates its 15th anniversary with a partnership with outerwear brand Schott NYC to re-create the Perfecto, considered to be the first-ever motorcycle jacket, released in 1928 – the new version has a crimson fleece lining and maroon elbow patches – Aug 8
  • In celebration of the 70th anniversary of the House of Dior, the National Gallery of Victoria presents The House of Dior: Seventy Years of Haute Couture, with a display of more than 140 garments designed by Christian Dior Couture between 1947 and 2017, Melbourne, Australia – Aug 27 – Nov 7
  • Launched in 2005, Fashion Week Stockholm showcases Sweden’s most interesting designers and brands – Aug 30 – Sept 1
