We here at Dandelion Chandelier believe that one of life’s greatest luxuries is being in the middle of a really good book.
Herewith – as the last official weekend of summer begins – are some works of fiction we’ve read recently that we think will take you to that luxurious place, whether you read them on your Kindle or by holding the volumes in your hands (which is our preferred method):
–Siracusa by Delia Ephron – a brilliantly written literary thriller set in Rome and in a gritty town on the Sicilian coast involving lots of excellent food and wine, scenery and chills
–Enchanted August by Brenda Bowen – a great beach read set on an island in Maine; four strangers rent a large manor home together for a month, and funny and poignant adventures ensue
–The Last Painting of Sara de Vos by Dominic Smith – moving between Amsterdam in 1650, Manhattan in 1950 and Sydney, Australia today, this novel about an artist’s life and her legacy is beautiful, melancholy and moving in equal measure
–Nine Women, One Dress by Jane Rosen – a romp through Manhattan with a little black dress and its many owners; yes, it’s Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants for grown-ups, and yes, it works
–The Nest by Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney — even better than we expected, given all the hype – a smart, humane and multi-layered examination of a family of four siblings and their issues dealing with a promised inheritance from their father
–Bright, Precious Days by Jay McInerney — the third in an excellent trio of novels about a wealthy couple and their New York life; the author masterfully captures the inner lives of both the husband and the wife over several decades in the city
–The Improbability of Love by Hannah Rothschild – set in the refined world of fine art auctions, in this comic novel we hear the voice of a painting that is being sold for millions (it’s understandably a bit cynical, having seen a great deal in its 300 years), as well as the voices of all the people who desperately want to possess it
–Collected Poems: 1974-2004 by Rita Dove – this unabridged volume of the poems of the U.S. Poet Laureate and Pulitzer prizewinner over thirty years makes for an engrossing read; this is a master at work
